Free ESPN College Basketball Picks Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs

This Tuesday, the Mississippi State Bulldogs will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Mississippi State is coming off a huge 92-84 victory over Auburn, one of the better teams in the SEC. In general, it’s been one of the best seasons in recent memory for the Bulldogs, who are 15-4 and currently ranked 22nd in the nation. Ben Howland has taken this squad and turned them into a threat in the SEC. That being said, they haven’t played amazingly well in conference, sitting at 3-3 currently. Mississippi is a potent team on offense. They put up 78.4 points per game on 47 percent shooting. They are particularly effective from three point range, where they shoot 37 percent. If this team gets going from three, they become very difficult to stop. If a team can prevent them from heating up too much, however, that gives them a significantly better chance. The Bulldogs have four guys they can consistently rely on for offensive production: Quinndary Weatherspoon (17.3 ppg), Lamar Peters (13.0 ppg), Aric Holman (11.4 ppg), and Nick Weatherspoon (10.3 ppg). If any one of these four gets going, the Crimson Tide will have a tough time.

Alabama just suffered a disappointing loss to Baylor in the SEC/Big 12 Tournament last week 73-68. It was a tough loss for the Tide and one they’ll wish they could have back, especially after giving up the lead with two minutes left in regulation. However, Alabama has still had some spectacular moments so far this season. The Tide demolished a good Ole Miss squad 74-53, just a few games after playing a close game against the No. 1 team in the nation, Tennessee. They lost that game on the road by only three points. Their most notable win has got to be their close 77-75 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats earlier this month. They’ve had some wins this year that have been really impressive. They’ve also had some mind-boggling losses such as the games against Baylor and a not very good Texas A&M squad. They haven’t been consistently great, which is frustrating. But while they haven’t been amazing straight up this season, they have been good against the spread recently. They’re 7-3 in their last ten, including 4-1 ATS in their last five against Mississippi State. They’ve also done a good job playing against Q1 and Q2 teams so far this season, so they shouldn’t be afraid of the the Bulldogs coming into their home court.

ESPN College Basketball Scores Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

This one should be a fun one between two teams that haven’t played great in conference play but have some big wins and overall successful seasons up to this point. But only one team can win, so who’s the team to back in this one? I’m going with Alabama. They have a history of consistently beating the Bulldogs, winning 10 of the last 12. They’ve played well at home recently, winning four of their last five, and they’ve done a great job of playing up to their competition. The Bulldogs are a fine squad with a lot of veteran guys that give them a lot of options on offense. But the Tide have the home court advantage in this one as will be looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Baylor. I’ll take the Tide to cover the small spread at home.

Pick: Alabama -1.5
