The State of Gambling: Missouri

In a decision that all of us love, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that sports gambling is no longer prohibited by Federal law, but that doesn’t mean that you will be able to place a bet on your favorite MLB team. States will still have the right to make sports betting Illegal within their borders. Luckily, for the people in state of Missouri, their lawmakers have already shown that they want to allow sports betting in their state. In January 2018, a bill was introduced to allow traditional sports betting on riverboat casinos. While State lawmakers have shown that they want to make sports betting legal, they will not have the time to push legislature through the process this calendar year.

Sports betting is still illegal in Missouri but gamblers have been able to try their luck with traditional gambling on Riverboats since 1992, they were the 5th state to allow riverboat gambling. Early Law gambling laws were more restricted than they are today, whereas in the beginning, the boats had to be moving and they were limited to two hours session with a $500 loss limit. In the early 2000’s, the state changed those laws to allow continuous boarding and boats did not have to be traveling. In 2008, the $500 loss limit was no longer required. Today, most Missouri riverboat casinos offer traditional casino games, but Missouri allows games of chance and games of skill. All casinos offer slots, video poker, craps, blackjack, roulette, and three card poker. But these following games are optional: baccarat, mini-baccarat, Caribbean stud poker, poker, pai gow poker, let it ride, Spanish 21, and four card poker. Also, don’t think you are going to be able to get free drinks while playing; there is a state law prohibiting casinos from giving free alcohol to gamblers. The state has an age restriction of 21 years old and the state requires casinos to withhold 4% of jackpots, drawing and tournament winnings of over $1200. Players can recoup some of the 4% if they file a state income tax return but who’s doing that?
