Bayern vs Atletico

UCL Group Stages, 2020-2021

At Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany

Score Prediction: 2-1 to Bayern Munich

Wasn’t just a few days ago that we saw the Bavarians lift the trophy in Lisbon, it seems like that to me but here they are again, this time taking on “El Cholo’s” men at home. Both teams will be starting there campaign a new and while Atletico will be willing to put on a better show than they have been able to in the past few campaigns, Bayern will be looking to make statement to show that they are willing to defend their trophy with all their might. The most interesting part of this encounter is definitely the nature of the two teams, they are teams with opposite styles of playing. Bayern will be looking to attack, playing the high back line with the full backs overlapping he wingers on both sides. On the other hand, Atleti will be looking to park the bus on Bayern, look to black the passing channels and attack on the counter.

Bayern to begin their title defense with a win?

Bayern have won every trophy that there was to win the calendar year, completing “Treble” as well as the Super Cup and have been hailed the best team in Europe in recent times. However, that was last season and this one is going to be unlike any other, especially given the number of games these teams are going to play and that is going to take its toll. The best example of fatigue ruining Bayern is probably their match against Hoffenheim, where the seemed physically run down and the pacy forwards of the opposition was able to expose the tired legs of Alaba and Boateng. Bayern refreshed their bench following the scare but even then, they did have a few scares at the back in the games leading up to the international break and it’s to be seen how they hold against the world class opposition in the Champion’s League.

Bayern has had problems breaking down teams that are willing to sit cooped up in their own half and stop the free flowing Bayern run, think of their match against PSG in the final a few months ago. With Thiago gone, the responsibility of making space in the midfield will lie on the able shoulders of Kimmich and what a fantastic player has turned out to be under the Bayern tutelage. It has to be his hunger, willing to give it all in each match, each tackle. He missed the match in the weekend due to personal reason but he expected to return midweek. Alongside him will be Leon Goretzka, prpbably the most underrated mid field in the whole of Europe. His work rate is also as good as Kimmich and does the job of tiding up well at the rear end for Bayern besides making those crazy runs into the box and linking up with Lewy, Muller and the wingers. At the back Alaba had been doing a great job last season at CB, however, this season he has been shoddy many a times and I wouldn’t want him to start and that might lead to Bayern conceding chances to the like of Suarez and Felix at the back once a long pass comes in. Bayern will have to win the mid field battle and put in Luca along with Sule at the back. Davis will then have to play LB and I really want Sarr to play RB instead of Pavard, as he would add attacking intensity.

The key to breaking the Atleti defense will be getting players in the box for Bayern and lately, they have been doing that well. Besides Goretzka and Kimmich making in runs from the mid field, Bayern have often had at least on of the Full Backs in the box along with the wingers, Muller and Lewy. The vintage duo of Muller and Lewy will have to hit their strides as they have been doing recently taking turns passing and scoring goals for each other.

Gnabry tested positive for Covid, so Doglus Costa will be starting along with Coman.

Or, will Atletico de Madrid be able to stem the Bayern Attack?

Its been some time now that Simione had changed the look of this team and now, it is beginning to feel a little stale! Of course, they do not play that attractive type of football and you have to take them just as they are but the problem with them has been their lack of consistency. They have been inconsistent in the La Liga and given the phase of decline that the Barcelona and Real Madrid have been going through, the time had been ripe for Atleti to work the, selves up and grab the crown bu they have been far from it. Even though Atletico have had a much less hectic start to the season, Diego Simeone has witnessed his side already drop points to Huesca and Villarreal respectively.

Diego Costa is a massive doubt for Atletico Madrid heading into this fixture. The ex-Chelsea striker picked up a thigh injury in the last game, though it shouldn’t create much of a dilemma for Simeone in terms of team selection as the Argentine is most likely to deploy Luis Suarez alongside Joao Felix, at the tip of Atleti’s 4-4-2. Speaking of the 4-4-2, the two banks of four is widely known to provide maximum protection against teams who like to play with possession. However, it won’t be surprising to see Simeone embracing the Seb Hoeness tactic by leaving a massive gap in between the lines, with the defenders playing out from the back and attackers operating around the shoulders of the Bayern Munich defenders. Defenders like Stefan Savic and Felipe may not be the best passers in world football, but they are capable of threading long balls that could catch Bayern out on the counter, especially given how high they operate.

Atleti’s best chance to beat Bayern will be to catch them on the counter, while playing long balls over the back 4 of the Bavarians, this has been a proven tactic against them and thus the like of Lucas Torreira, Koke and Saul Niguez are going to be extremely important in the middle. If they are able to beat the Bayern mid field then it will be upto the likes of Suarez and Felix to beat Neuer and find the back of the net.

Predicted XI

Bayern Munich

Even though, I want to have Sarr in the middle at RB, I doubt Flick will discard Pavard. And I really hope that Alaba does not start and neither does Boateng.

Davis Hernandez Sule Pavard

Kimmich Goretzka

Costa Muller Coman

Atletico de Madrid

Trippier Savic Felipe Lodi

Correa Koke Torreira Saul

Felix Suarez.

This is not going to be one of those crazy high scoring matches, in fact, Bayern vs Atletico has never been that. Both teams will have to fight and keep their wits about them to get the 3 points under the belt. But, Bayern definitely has more talent and better players in most of the position and should be able to break down the Atletico deadlock, but then again, in football, who can tell?
