January 12th, 2019 — The previous matchup between these two was a chaotic affair as Duke’s freshman Cam Reddish got the last say with a go-ahead three-pointer to send the Blue Devils to an electrifying 80-78 victory in early season conference play. The Blue Devils’ superb shooting kept them within this contest, shooting 46.2% (30-65) from the field while shooting a great percentage of 45.8% (11-24) from three-point range that placed them in position to steal this victory. On the other hand, the Seminoles’ somewhat shooting woes plagued them as they relied on their free throw shooting to keep this contest within distance by earning 24 trips to the line, and hitting 20 of them at a 83.3% rate. Duke’s freshmen R.J. Barrett (32 points, FG: 10-17, & 3PT: 4-7) and Cam Reddish (23 points, FG: 9-15, & 3PT: 5-8). The Seminoles were led by Phil Cofer (21 points, seven rebounds, FG: 8-13, & 3PT: 5-8) and Mfiondu Kabengele (24 points, 10 rebounds, & 3PT: 2-3) in defeat.
Duke Blue Devils (28-5) #5
The Blue Devils finally got their vengeance against North Carolina in the ACC Tournament Semifinal after losing two of their last few games against the Tar Heels in conference play, and of course without one of their star freshman in Zion Williamson. The Blue Devils’ star freshman Zion Williamson hit the contested go-ahead layup to get over the hump against the Tar Heels to secure a trip to today’s ACC Tournament Final in a closely knitted 74-73 affair. Zion led the way for the Blue Devils with 31 points and 11 rebounds. North Carolina’s Luke Maye put up 14 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Tar Heels in defeat.
Now that the Tar Heels are out of the way, the Seminoles are now in the way of the Blue Devils in claiming the ACC Tournament Championship and furthering their case for a number one seed, not just one of the four number one seeds but also number one overall. The key ingredients for the Blue Devils to look for in their matchup against Seminoles are: FG%: 44.7% (162nd), 3PT%: 33.4% (232nd), TOV: 447 (271st), and PF: 635 (316th). Duke must play aggressive defense against Florida State’s offense as the Seminoles are somewhat inefficient, averaging 75.3 PPG (108th) while shooting 44.7% (162nd) from the field and 33.4% (232nd) from three-point range. Duke will need to also limit the Seminoles’ offensive rebounding as they rank 63rd in the nation with 377 to limit their scoring opportunities. Lastly, force the Seminoles into foul trouble as they rank 316th in the nation with 635 fouls, and force them into turnovers as they rank 271st in the nation with 447 in order to claim victory.
Florida State Seminoles (27-6) #12
The Seminoles sure didn’t forget about their early season conference lost against Virginia as they came out strong against the Cavaliers, and never looked back as Florida State cruised into the ACC Final with a 69-59 victory in the ACC Semifinal. The Seminoles dominated the Cavaliers on the boards, winning in that department with a 35-20 advantage that disrupted Virginia’s offensive rhythm. Now that Virginia is out of their hair, Duke is on their hit list as the Blue Devils defeated them early in the season off of Cam Reddish’ timely three in a close affair.
In order for the Seminoles to defeat the Blue Devils, they must force the Blue Devils to shoot more threes as they shoot an inefficient 30.5% (339th) in that department. That’s one of the three weaknesses within the Blue Devils’ scoring offense. The second is their free throw shooting as they shoot 68.6% (247th). And the third is their turnovers as they have racked up 433 for the season, ranking 227th in the nation. However, the main ingredient, a major deficit for the Blue Devils is their lack of scoring depth despite their elite offense that averages 83.8 PPG (7th). If the Seminoles can force offense from other Blue Devils not named R.J. Barrett (23.1 PPG, 4.2 APG, & 7.5 RPG) and Zion Williamson (22.2 PPG, 9.1 RPG, & 2.1 APG), then they have a great chance of dethroning Duke and avenging their early season loss.

The Blue Devils are well aware that the Seminoles are not only looking to avenge an early season loss, but to do so on a big stage. And the Blue Devils shine in these types of moments. So, Duke will be prepared for any haymakers the Seminoles come at them with. On the other hand, the Seminoles are competing against a different monster, one they are familiar with, and will attempt to suffocate the Blue Devils’ offense in pursuit of the ACC Tournament title. However, the Blue Devils will, again, win this contest because their great ability to not only rely on their astounding offensive duo in R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson, but to do so in unison of the group. Not to forget Cam Reddish, the third offensive plug, will also be key in helping to determine victory for the Blue Devils.
