ESPN NCAA Basketball Pick Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Duke Blue Devils

A nice little ACC game this Monday with 2nd ranked Duke against Notre Dame. Notre Dame is on a losing streak and will be looking to get back to their winning ways in this matchup. Duke is on a three-game winning streak and will be looking to extend it to four.

Duke Blue Devils

Duke is 17-2 and is on a nice little win streak of three games. One of those three games was against 4th ranked Virginia Cavaliers who gave them a game and kept it tight throughout with Duke winning by only two points 72-70. Duke is led by three amazing freshmen RJ Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish. Barrett is Duke’s leading scorer averaging 23.9 PPG as well as 6.9 RPG. Williamson is Duke’s second-leading scorer averaging 21.7 PPG and 9.2 RPG. Reddish is the third leading scorer averaging 12.8 PPG. After these three freshmen, the scoring averages go into single digits. Duke relies heavily on these freshmen to carry the bulk of the scoring load and most every game they do a great job, but when they struggle it is hard for Duke to get the win.

The Blue Devils’ best win was against then ranked 2nd Kentucky in the season opener. This game is really where Duke showed everyone they were a force to be reckoned with and that freshmen could lead a team. Duke blew out Kentucky 118-84. Duke started with their foot on the gas pedal and never stopped. All three of Duke’s freshman scored in double digits, but RJ Barrett led with 33 points and 6 assists. Duke’s worst loss came against Syracuse. It was a very close game that went into overtime, but Duke wasn’t able to get the win as Syracuse made some great plays at the end to upset Duke 95-91. Barrett and Williamson both had double-doubles in the game. Williamson had 35 points and 10 boards and Barrett had 23 points and 16 boards. Looking at those stat lines you would think Duke would have won, but what held Duke back was Barrett shooting 8-30 from the field. Barrett and Williamson shot 50 of Duke’s 80 total shot. The difference was Syracuse moved the ball and got their whole team involved and Duke relied on Barrett and Williamson and Barrett didn’t play well.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Unranked Notre Dame comes into this matchup on a four-game losing streak, one they would love to break on their home court against an overpowered Duke team. Notre Dame is led by John Mooney, TJ Gibbs and D.J. Harvey. Mooney is a junior forward averaging a double-double, 14.5 PPG and 10.8 RPG. Gibbs is a junior guard averaging 13.4 PPG and 3.9 APG. Harvey is a sophomore guard averaging 11.1 PPG and 4.5 RPG. These three players are Notre Dame’s top scorers and the players who look to carry the offense. These players will have to step up and be aggressive if they want to beat Duke.

Notre Dame’s best win was against unranked Illinois. It was a close game and Notre Dame barely snuck by winning 76-74. Harvey and Gibbs led the team with 19 points each and Notre Dame shot an efficient 46 percent from the field. Mooney only played ten minutes and scored only four points which is why the game was probably so close, but the two other leading scorers for Notre Dame stepped up and got the win. Notre Dame’s worst loss was against 3rd ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Virginia took over the game from the beginning and never looked back pouring on the points and ultimately beating Notre Dame by a large margin 82-55. Mooney was Notre Dame’s top scorer with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mooney was the only player on Notre Dame to score in double digits. No one else on Notre Dame could make their shots and they ended up shooting 36 percent from the field while Virginia shot 52 percent from the field.

ESPN NCAA Basketball Scores Duke Blue Devils vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This matchup should be a fun one to watch RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson always put on an offensive display and in this matchup, it should be no different. Notre Dame has struggled this season against ranked teams and has been unable to get a win thus far. Duke will be coming into this game with a great deal of confidence from their three-game winning streak and I believe they will make it four. Notre Dame has some great offensive players, but Duke has better and it will be hard for Notre Dame to defend Duke’s leading scorers. Expect Duke to get the win and continue their win streak.

Pick: Duke -14.5
