March Madness Picks Duke Blue Devils vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

The Blue Devils look to build upon a narrow victory as they face the Hokies in the sweet 16 of this year’s March Madness Tournament.

Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies are coming off a good win against Liberty. However, if they want any chance of advancing past Duke they will need a better performance from guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker. He leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points a game. Virginia Tech will also need to clamp down on defense and attack the boards on both ends. It will start with forward Kerry Blackshear. He is the team’s best rebounder with 7.2 rebounds a game.

The Hokies are impressively ranked 9th in scoring defense this season as they hold teams to 61.7 points a game. They also average 15.1 assists a game and are 51st in the country in that category. They make 39.5% of their three point shots and their overall field goal percentage is at 47.4%. They are also tied for 129 in scoring offense which is not great.

Duke Blue Devils

Duke was fortunate to have survived with point victory over a very competitive and well coached UCF squad. Had UCF not squandered an alley loop which would’ve placed them up 6 with 2 minutes to go or had they the final lay up and put back not rolled out, then the Blue Devils wouldn’t be here and they know it. Nonetheless, this is still an elite squad that should be feared for the rest of tournament. The size issue that Tacko Fall gave them won’t be the case against Virginia Tech or most opponents moving forward. Future NBA players RJ Barrett and Zion Williamson have continue to be as advertised. Williamson will obviously present matchup problems that the Hokies will struggle to deal with.

The game against UCF has an eerie feeling of one of those games where if an elite squad was to be bounced, it would’ve been then, otherwise, they will be a tour de force moving forward. The Blue Devils are 8th in scoring offense as they average 83.5 points a game. The team is ranked 31st in the country with a field goal percentage of 47.7%. The team also averages over 15 assists a game. However, they are ranked 69th in scoring defense as they surrender 67.6 points a game.

March Madness Expert Picks Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Duke Blue Devils

Duke is the better team and has more star power. Look for them to send a message to the rest of the tournament that they are still one of the favorites to win the whole thing. The Hokies will try to muck up the game defensively and throw bodies at Williamson. They will need to use some of the defensive zone principles that UCF used to give Duke problems at times. I can’t see Duke losing to the Hokies twice in one season. Ultimately, it won’t be enough as Duke is to smart and well-coached of a team.
