The Duke Blue Devils travel up to Charlottesville to battle against ACC-rivals the Virginia Cavaliers. Duke is coming off two losses in the last three games after a lengthy win streak. They most recently lost in a shoot-out against ACC-bottom-feeder Wake Forest, 101-113. Virginia, on the other hand, have gone 8-1 in the last nine games. They kept their last two opponents to less than 60 points. Virginia Tech was their last victims, limiting them to only 53 points.
Duke losing to Wake Forest was nearly as shocking as their loss against Stephan F. Austin earlier in the year. Well, not really, but you get the point. Wake Forest hasn’t played well at all this year, and to score 113 points against a team that might win the ACC is ridiculous. But Duke fought, going into double overtime before Wake Forest ran away with it. Both Wendell Moore Jr and Tre Jones scored +24 points. But Duke simply played sloppy, they gave up more turnovers and committed ten more personal fouls than Wake Forest. Wake Forest out shot them, and despite a worse FT%, had 50 opportunities to make it from the charity stripe. Duke only had 34.
Duke’s last two loses were ugly. NC State beat them by a 22-point margin earlier this month. But Duke still ranks at the top of the ACC in most offensive categories. They just struggle on the defensive side.
Virginia almost looks like their opposite. The Cavaliers rank at the top of the ACC in most defensive categories. During their 5-game win streak, they have limited their opponents to an average of 57 points. But the last two games, they cut it close–each were decided by late threes. Kihei Clark made the three against V-Tech most recently. Before half, Virginia gave up only 11 points on defense. But they gave up the other 42 sloppy. Mamadi Diakite played yet another outstanding game scoring a game high 19 points and two blocks. He absolutely shut down the inside. Which allowed Virginia to out-rebound V-Tech by 11. Those kind of halves can decide crucial games with offense as good as Duke.

It’s a home game for Virginia and they’re one of the best defenses in the country. I don’t think they’ll win, but I definitely think they’ll keep it close. Duke will win, but with a spread like 3.5, Virginia will cover.
