The Terrapins come into the final day of college basketball's regular-season having lost three out of their last four games. Mark Turgeon's team was ranked as high as 9th in the nation in the AP poll in week 16. It seemed as if Maryland was going to cruise to a conference title, but is in a must-win game to capture even a share of the title. Michigan also has been on a losing streak of their own going 1-2 in their last two contests. Just when we thought Juwan Howard's team was back to early season form that had Michigan ranked as high as 5th in the country they drop two games in a row. The Wolverines did bounce back against Nebraska in their last matchup, but that win is less than stellar.
Mark Turgeon will look to seize his first Big-10 title in Maryland history since joining the conference. The Badgers have already claimed their stake in the title, but the Terps have the same opportunity today at home. Senior Anthony Cowan Jr. has struggled in this losing skid scoring 14 PPG, two whole points below his season average. In their last game, the Terrapins were flat out dominated by Rutgers 78-67. The Scarlet Knights were able to keep a constant double-digit lead to prevent the Terps from making a push. Cowan had a team-high 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting in the loss.
In the latest update of Joe Lunardi's bracket, the Terrapins currently sit as a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. On offense, the Terps average 71.43 points per meeting while shooting 41.53% from the floor. According to KenPom, Maryland is ranked the 165th best offense in college basketball. Anthony Cowan Jr. is the team's leading scorer with 16.2 PPG, which is 6th in the Big 10 for points per game. He also ranks 5th in the Big 10 in assists with 4.6 assists per game.
Defensively, Maryland is allowing 64.30 points per game, letting opponents shoot 39.70% from the field. That's good for 42nd in the country according to KenPom's model. The Terps rely on Jalen Smith on the defensive end of the floor. He is second in the Big-10 in blocks with 2.3 per game.
First-year coach Juwan Howard will look to wrap up his first season at Michigan with a win over another ranked team. We know this team has the talent to take down any team in the country as they defeated #2 ranked Gonzaga in Atlantis earlier this year. The Wolverines have gone 1-2 in their last three games, losing against Wisconsin and Ohio State before bouncing back against Nebraska. They had won five games in a row prior to facing Wisconsin.
Junior forward Isaiah Livers leads Michigan with 13.3 PPG and 4.1 rebounds per game. He is excellent from beyond the arc, splashing in threes at a 42.3% clip. Senior point guard Zavier Simpson is scoring 12.9 PPG and 7.9 assists which leads the Big-10. The Wolverines are averaging 75.20 points per game while shooting 46.14% from the floor. They are the second-best scoring offense statistically in the Big-10 just behind Iowa, according to KenPom.
The Wolverines rank 134th in the nation on defense allowing 67.77 points per game. Opponents are shooting 41.95% from the field and 32.04% from the three-point range against Michigan. Juwan Howard relies on his guard defense for his team's success. The duo of Zavier Simpson and Franz Wagner have very active hands with their on-ball pressure. Jon Teske is 6th in the Big-10 in blocks with 1.9 per game.
