The Ole Miss Rebels are heading to Starkville on Saturday for a big time in state matchup with the 14th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Mississippi State

Fueling with momentum due to a hot start on the year, Ben Howland’s Mississippi State Bulldogs were able to build an impressive non conference resume but now find themselves in a must win situation. After starting the year 12-1 and reaching their highest ranking since November of 2004, the Bulldogs ran into some trouble on Tuesday night when they opened up Southeastern Conference play with an overtime loss on the road at South Carolina. The Bulldogs certainly didn’t look like themselves in the loss vs South Carolina, but hope to gain some momentum back by taking care of business on Saturday and even earning the state of Mississippi’s bragging rights. Mississippi State is very talented and has the experience and depth of a team poised to make a deep run in March. The Bulldogs will need Senior guard Quinndary Weatherspoon (17.1 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.8 apg) and Junior guard Lamar Peters (13.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 6.2 apg) to play well if they want a shot at beating the Rebels. The Bulldogs have looked very impressive when the offense flows through Lamar Peters. Another player to keep an eye on is 6’11 Senior forward Aric Holman (13.0 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.6 apg). Holman has been playing at an extremely high level and can create a serious match up issue for opponents. It will be interesting to see how to Bulldogs react to their SEC slip up.

Ole Miss

While the Ole Miss Rebels might not have a top 25 ranking beside their name, they sure are playing with top 25 energy recently. First year head coach and former Mississippi State Bulldog Letterman (1982) Kermit Davis Jr. has things rolling in Oxford. The Rebels finished up non conference play with a 10-2 record and have been extremely impressive in Southeastern Conference play. The Rebels traveled to Vanderbilt in their conference opener and turned some heads with a ten point victory. Shortly following, the Rebels gained the attention of the entire country after an inspiring 82-67 victory at home over the 11th ranked Auburn Tigers. The Rebels are led by their impressive back court which consist of Junior Breein Tyree (17.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.1 apg), Senior Terence Davis (16.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.6 apg), and Sophomore Devontae Shuler ( 10.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.2 apg). Tyree is having a career type year and is the only SEC player ranked in the top 10 in scoring and shooting as well as in three pointers and free throws. He was also named SEC player of the week following his stellar performance at Vanderbilt where he scored a career high 31 points and shot 68 percent from the floor.

Ole Miss has reached its peak playing its best basketball as of late, but their impressive run will surely end soon. Mississippi State will be the team to do it while looking to impress its fans and rout its in state rival to get back in the win column. I like the Bulldogs in this one, but expect Ole Miss to cover.
