Clemson comes home after a road trip to Pittsburg. North Carolina begins a two-game road test. Both teams look to stay hot as the ACC championship remains just around the corner. Currently, Clemson stand as the Last Four In according to ESPN Bracketology. North Carolina wants to finish strong to remain the #1 seed after a year removed from such a seed. UNC ranks among the most #1 seeds in tournament history.

The North Carolina Tar Heels sit at #5 in the AP poll. After a lose at home against Virginia, the Tar Heels went on a four game winning streak. During that span they averaged 87.7 points per game.

Most recently, they defeated Syracuse on Tuesday. Although UNC allowed 85 points, they scored 93 themselves. (UNC ranks among the worst in defense and best in offense in the ACC conference). Freshman guard Coby White scored a career-high 34 points against the Orange, with six 3-pointers. He also scored all of his 10 free throws and converted a total of 9 on 14 field goal attempts. However, UNC dominance came from out-rebounding the Orange by 46 boards compared to 25.  Star forward Luke Maye came up with 12 of the boards. Maye averages just under 10 rebounds per game. The senior helps lead a UNC team which ranks 2nd in the nation in rebounds and 3rd in PPG.

Clemson defeated the Tar Heels in their meeting last year, 82-78. That win helped the Tigers get a #5 seed during the tournament. Now the Tigers need a win against their neighboring state rivals more than ever. After losing 3 straight, the Tigers turned a leaf and defeated Boston College then Pittsburgh back-to-back. Clemson’s defense suffocated Pittsburgh allowing the Panthers to only 48 points on 27% from the field.

This defense held two teams to under 50 points during the season. They allow 61.9 points per game, which ranks 20th in country and translates to 2nd in the ACC conference. The Tigers achieve this by limiting ball movement and slowing the game down to their pace. Although their offense ranks among the worst in the ACC, senior and do-it-all guard Marcquise Reed averages a stat line of 19/5/3. Furthermore, two more seniors average in the double digits; the Tigers average 2.2 years of experience among their roster.

North Carolina dominates with their offense, and recently beat the former #1 team in the country, Duke. On the other side, Clemson wins with their solid defense and experience. But it comes down to who wants it more; and the stakes are highest for Clemson. Clemson needs to win now and possibly during the conference championship to make it to the tourney. UNC can lose today and win later and still be a #1 seed. I’m going with the upset and picking Clemson.
