March 7th, 2018—The Tar Heels, like many times, have had to face Jim Boeheim’s infamous 2-3 zone defense, an arduous puzzle for teams to solve. Some have while others were left in the wind. However, the Tar Heels, one of the many, seemed to have resolved the zone as they nonchalantly dissected it in 78-59 defeat of the Orangemen in the 2nd round of the conference tournament. The Tar Heels made it to the free-throw line, hitting 22 of 28 while the Orangemen hit 11 of 14. The Orangemen lacked much ball movement as they piled up only six assists in contrast to the Tar Heels’ 20. Former Tar Heel Theo Pinson led the way with a near triple-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. Syracuse were led by Oshae Brissett as he put up 20 points along with 10 rebounds and 5 of 7 from three-point range.
Syracuse Orange (18-9)
The Orangemen have been a respectable team all season. They have been one of the best scoring defenses in the nation, allowing opponents to average 64.1 PPG, 23rd in the nation. Their scoring offense, on the other hand, not as satisfactory as their scoring defense, averages 69.8 PPG, ranking 264th in the nation. The major components to their subpar offense is their substandard shooting as they shoot 42% (294th) from the field, 49.4% (231st) from two-point range, 32.1 % (297th) from three-point range, and 68.5% (255th) from FT. Another component that makes their scoring offense subpar is their total assists as they have 329 (270th) for the season. Limited ball movement makes an offense more predictable for defenses. In addition, the Orangemen lack scoring depth as they have only three double digit scorers in Tyus Battle (17.1 PPG, 2.5 APG, & 3.2 RPG), Elijah Hughes (13.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG, & 3PT%: 35.1%), and Oshae Brissett (13 PPG & 7.9 RPG). On defense, their ONLY weakness is their defensive rebounding, 668 (245th). However, in order for the Orangemen to defeat the Tar Heels, they must force turnovers as the Tar Heels rank 226th in the nation with 371. Orangemen will also need to force the Tar Heels into foul trouble, especially their key players. They will need to really crash the boards as the Tar Heels are an elite rebounding team. Lastly, they will need to keep up with the elite offense of the Tar Heels by scoring more points.
North Carolina Tar Heels (22-5) #5
Fresh off of back-to-back key victories over Duke and Florida State, the Tar Heels are peaking at the right time. Conference tournament is around the corner, with the Tar Heels will most likely ending up with a high seed. The Tar Heels’ elite offense will help them advance into March. The Tar Heels shooting clips are great as they shoot 47.4% (42nd) from the field, 52.7% (95th) from two-point range, 37.6% (47th) from three-point range, 74% (58th) from FT, grabbed 345 offensive boards (26th), and averages 87.1 PPG (3rd). They are also great on the defensive boards with 823 (4th) as well as total rebounding with 1168 (2nd). The Tar Heels are a very cohesive unit but will need to truly rely on Cameron Johnson (16.7 PPG, 2.3 APG, 5.7 RPG, & 3PT%: 47.3% (2.6-5.5)), Coby White (15.2 PPG, 4.2 APG, 3.2 RPG, & 3PT%: 36%), and Luke Maye (15.1 PPG & 9.9RPG). However, on the defensive side of the ball, the Tar Heels will need to correct their turnovers as they have turned the ball over 371 times for the season, ranking 226th in the nation. From turnovers, points are scored, and the Tar Heels allows this as teams averages 72.7 PPG (218th). In order for the Tar Heels to come out victorious against the Orangemen, they should limit their turnovers as the Orangemen plays great defense and will attempt to make them pay as much as possible through transitional scoring. If the Tar Heels can limit turnovers as well as avoid foul trouble, this is their game to win.

FREE NCAA BB Prediction Syracuse Orange vs North Carolina Tar Heels
This should be a very competitive as both teams play hard every night. The Orangemen will definitely bring the length of the 2-3 zone and make it tough for the Tar Heels. The Tar Heels are a different team around this year but will have to approach the 2-3 zone similarly to last year’s win over the Orange. However, the Orangemen are also looking to improve upon things.Nevertheless, the Tar Heels will play efficiently on both sides of the ball, but more so offensively, and this will help win the game for them as this contest will become a slugfest defensively.
