The Tar Heels vanquished Virginia Tech in their first-round matchup of the ACC tourney yesterday 78-56. With one down and four more to go for the automatic bid, North Carolina will face the Syracuse Orange in the next round of the tourney. The Orange enter the tournament having gone 3-2 in their last five games. One of those losses came against the Heels, where they were pummeled them 92-79.

Jim Boeheim and company will attempt to sweep the field in the tournament to gain the automatic bid. Joe Lunardi currently has the Orange, not in the NCAA tournament bracket. But if they can rattle off some wins in the tourney against ranked teams things can change real fast. Syracuse is 17-14 on the season and finished tied for sixth in the ACC.

Elijah Hughes is the Orange's leading scorer with 18.8 PPG along with 4.9 rebounds. Hughes is second in the conference in scoring right behind North Carolina's Cole Anthony. Buddy Boeheim is the second leading scorer 15.3 PPG, he is also one of the best three-point shooters in the country converting 36.8% of his eight attempts per game. His 8.32 attempts per game leads the ACC in three-point shots attempted ranking him 17th in the country. As a team, Syracuse is averaging 74.10 points per meeting while shooting 43.37% from the floor.

On the defensive side of the ball, Syracuse is ranks 241st in the country in points allowed. The Orange are surrendering 68.75 points per game, while letting opponents shoot 40.85% from the field. Joseph Girad III is 10th in the conference in steals averaging 1.5 per game. The Orange are allowing 85.5 points a game on games played on a neutral court this season.

North Carolina

The Heels come into today seeking two wins in two days. Garrison Brooks muscled his way for 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting against the Hokies last night. All but one starter on the offense eclipsed double-digits in the game. Cole Anthony had an off-game as he went only 3 of 10 from the floor. Expect for him to bounce back today agaisnst the Orange.

Cole Anthony is the ACC's leading scorer with 19.1 points per game. The Heels are averaging 72.81 points per game, ranking them the 121st offense in college basketball. The Heels are 4-1 on neutral courts this season putting up 74 points per contest.

Even though they are ranked at the bottom of every defensive category the statistics are deceiving. The Heels haven't been playing complete basketball all season and all it takes is good timing. Roy Williams squad held Virginia tech last night to 56 points, allowing them to shoot an abysmal 29% from the floor. If they can keep this up there is no reason for them not to make the ACC championship game.
