The Oklahoma State Cowboys and TCU Horned Frogs both travel to Kansas City, Missouri to duel out the first round of the Big 12 Championship. Both teams struggled during the regular season, ending up negative in the Big 12 play. These teams faced off twice during that time: Oklahoma State beat TCU most recently after losing to them the first time.

Oklahoma State look to beat the Horned Frogs again and improve their win streak to 3. Last Saturday, the Cowboys beat West Virginia 85-77. OSU converted an impressive 50% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc. Junior guard Lindy Waters III led the way, scoring a game-high 19 points, converting 7 of the 11 FGs, 2 of which from deep. Waters averages 12.4 points per game, with a 45 3P% and 90.8 FT%. They lead the conference 3PA and are 2nd in 3P%, they also turnover the ball the least. In the win against WVU, they scored 11 3Ps and turnover the ball only 5 times. Their leading scorer, Cameron McGriff scored 14 with two steals and a block.

The standout in recent weeks remains freshman forward Yor Anei. More of a defensive star throughout the year, Anei produced surprising numbers on offense in their 2-game win streak. He scored 16 against TCU and 14 against Baylor. Furthermore, he averaged 7.5 rebounds, and an outlandish 7 blocks per game in that span. After going 60% from the charity stripe during the season, he converted all 6 FT attempts in those two games. In the season, he averages 2.5 blocks per game.

After losing three in a row, TCU beat in-state rivals Texas in Austin. Leading scorer Desmond Bane took over the game. He scored a career-high 34 points against the Longhorns with 6-8 shooting from deep. He made more FGs than the entire TCU team combine. But as a team, the Horned Frogs got 7 blocks and out-rebounded Texas 35 to their 24. In the last two meetings against Oklahoma State, Bane scored 19 in the loss and 26 in their win. But during their most recent 3-game skid, he averaged only 10 points during a 40 minute playing time average.

TCU’s weakness remains their defense, ranking 9th in the conference of 12. But their offense ranks in the top-4. TCU went 11-1 to start the season. But when conference play came around proceed to accumulate an 8-11 record. The Texas win comes much needed, limiting them to only 56 points (they average 75).

Although their overall records do not reflect it, both teams seemed to drift in different direction in recent weeks. Oklahoma State played competitively against #11 Texas Tech, only to lose in overtime. They lost to #15 Kansas the next game by only 5 points. During their two-game win streak, they showed a lot of potential, particularly in their freshman Anei. But can a slumping TCU Horned Frogs build on their win against Texas and their star player’s breakout game? I say no. I’m going with Oklahoma State in the upset.
