Head coach Herm Edwards produced a respectable first season at Arizona State in 2018, and now the expectations are to do even more this year. The Sun Devils possess a nice mix of youthful talent and a growing depth chart, however, consistency must be present on both sides of the ball. Last season can be categorized by too many mental lapses and not enough quality defensive performances late in games.
This year’s roster will not be quite as dynamic on offense as they were last season, but the defense should see an improvement in terms of consistency and will be much more reliable against the run.

The offense that was so effective and efficient last season will lose their star contributors as QB Manny Wilkins and WR N’Keal Harry both depart for the NFL. Rising redshirt junior Dillion Cole-Sterling was the main backup, and now he seems poised to assume the starting duties in 2019.
Star running back Eno Benjamin was the workhorse for the Sun Devils’ offense last season. The rising junior has the ability to catch passes and has a knack for finding the end zone. Benjamin will need some more help in 2019, and he should get it from a solid assortment of Sun Devil backs.
The offensive line Benjamin will work behind is returning four starters who are coming off a stellar performance in 2018. The group will be one of the Pac-12’s most experienced and effective front lines.
The receiving unit is going to need a new No. 1 target to fill the void left by Harry, but just about everyone else of note is coming back. There is no one with Harry’s level of talent, but the combination of seniors Brandon Aiyuk and Kyle Williams will be more than enough to help Cole-Sterling succeed.
It is important that the Sun Devils make efficient use of Eno Benjamin and dominate the ground game on offense this season. The wide receivers will be good enough to keep the passing attack alive.
Overall, Herm Edwards will be working with a very young team in 2019 and he will need Sterling-Cole to step up and be the veteran leader that the team needs. While Manny Wilkins was not a standout performer last season, he was very consistent and did not make too many errors. If Sterling-Cole wants to have a successful season, it is very important that he at least be consistent.
In terms of their schedule, Arizona State will control their own destiny in the opening weeks of the season. The Sun Devils get two warm-up games against Kent State and Sacramento State before having to travel East Lansing to take on Michigan State. If they are able to win all three of these games, the Arizona State will be firmly set up for a good season, with a very winnable conference opener against Colorado the following game.
The first half of Arizona State’s schedule features all winnable games and most of the games in the second half will be at home in Tempe, but they will still have to go up against USC, Oregon and Arizona in the closing weeks of the season.
With a light schedule in the opening weeks of the season, the Sun Devils’ offense will have time to find its groove before their competitive games in November. While they likely will not compete for the conference title, Arizona State will probably qualify for a bowl game in 2019 with at least a little improvement in their regular season record.
