FREE NCAA FOOTBALL PICK: Colorado Buffaloes vs California Bears

This Saturdays PAC-12 matchup features the Colorado Buffaloes and the California Bears. The Buffaloes are having another tough season, as they are the second worst team in the conference and last in the PAC-12 South Division. They have lost six in a row and are 2-6 in the conference. After their 30-7 loss to the Utah Utes, Head Coach Mike MacIntyre was fired and Colorado will try to regroup for a good win to end this overall bad season. The Cal Bears have had an average season, but some amazing wins, including their first win against USC in 15 years. So there has been some golden moments for this team. Cal is in the middle of the pack in the conference and second to last in the PAC-12 North Division. They have a 6-4 record overall and a 3-4 conference record. The Bears will try to finish the year with a winning record and end the season on a winning streak. Saturdays quarterbacks are Steven Montez vs. Chase Garbers.

The Colorado Buffaloes haven’t won a game since October 6 and that was against the slightly above average Arizona State Sun Devils. The Buffs have given up around 30 plus points or more in this six game stretch and two of those games have been double digit losses. Colorado has struggled to score at times and find a rhythm throughout the game. Most of the time they find a way to score first and then just go cold from there. The Buffaloes haven’t scored in the second half in two games and they only have one touchdown in those games as well. They did face the #17 Utah Utes and #8 Washington State Cougars, but you would think they can get a little more scoring when they were at home. Clearly the Buffaloes are a mess right now and it doesn’t look like they will clean their act up anytime soon. They even lost to the worst team in the conference, which is the 2-9 Oregon State Beavers. Colorado blew a 24-3 halftime lead and went on to lose 41-34 in overtime. An all around painful loss for the Buffs and the only game during this losing streak that they probably should have won. In this game, Montez went 24/39, for 319 yards, and two touchdown passes. Travon McMillian had 20 carries, for 132 yards, and one touchdown. K.D. put up amazing numbers with 13 receptions, for 198 yards, and two touchdowns. Now, the Buffs probably won’t put these numbers up against the Bears, but they should probably look back on this game and try to do this effort. Colorado needs a good start against the hyped Bears, a 60 minute effort, and limit the damage on defense. This team did start the season 5-0 and had a handful of commanding wins. So, Colorado is capable of turning it on again to finish the season.

The California “Golden” Bears have been feeling pretty golden lately. Cal has won three of their last four games and one of them was a huge, upset win against the #16 Washington Huskies. The Bears have had either three game winning streaks or losing streaks this year. They started 3-0 and then managed to lose three straight games to some average to below average PAC-12 teams. Then when it looked like a lost season for Cal, they managed to get some big wins against some of the elite teams in the conference. The Bears even gave #8 Washington State a scare. In that game, Cal was tied with the Cougars going into the fourth quarter and just lost on a couple of field goals. Over the last month, the Bears defense has been amazing, the Bears offense has been scoring at the right times in games, and simply doing just enough to win. This team has been a dark horse lately and the game against the Trojans showed that. Cal was down 14-0 at the half and on the road. They managed to get 15 points in the third quarter and have shutdown defense in the fourth. Luc Bequette and Evan Weaver were the standout defenders and they both had two sacks in the game. Chase Garbers only threw for 93 yards in the game, but at least took care of the football. The Cal defense will be golden again this weekend and probably win by double digits.

So, Colorado has been streaking in the wrong direction for awhile and now they have try to finish strong. The Bears have been a mystery team with their wins this month and look for them to try to take command early against the struggling Buffs. Colorado needs to have a good start to this game and just feel like they can play good football again. They have a good running back in Travon McMillian, who is able to match with Cal’s running back Patrick Laird. This won’t be a game of spectacular quarterback numbers, but mostly good defense and strong running games. The Bears defense has been awesome at controlling rushing yards against PAC-12’s best teams and they will show it again on Saturday. Bears win 27-13.
