The Golden Gophers of Minnesota are going to participate in their sixth bowl game in the last seven years. That is very solid for a team not known for their football prowess. They are set to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, in the Quick Lane Bowl, hosted at Ford Field.

Georgia Tech comes into the game as the favorite by 5.5 points, despite almost not being bowl eligible. The Yellow Jackets started off the year with one win and three losses. Whomever created the schedule was giving them no favors. Their first win came against Alcorn State, a tune up game for Georgia Tech. Their next tree contests were against The University of South Florida (a game they should’ve won), Pittsburgh, and Clemson. However, the Paul Johnson led Yellow Jackets, rattled off four wins in a row in the ACC, defeating Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Miami and Virginia, to become bowl eligible. Despite winning four of their last six games to end the season, Head Coach, Paul Johnson, announced that he will be retiring after the Bowl game. Geoff Collins, the current head coach of Temple, was elected as his replacement starting in 2019. Once upon a time, Collins was a graduate assistant with Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech has always been famous for their triple option attack. This has always confused me, as they somehow attract some of the best receiving talent that go to the NFL, most notably Demaryius Thomas and Calvin Johnson. This year Georgia Tech is lead by both of their “Quarterbacks”. As neither of them pass very much, they do not fit the mold of typical signal callers. Both TaQuon Marshall and Tobias Oliver ran for over 800 yards during the regular season. These two propelled the Yellow Jackets to an NCAA leading 334.9 yards per game rushing. The name of the game for the Jackets is to continue dominating on the ground all game.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers have a had a different tale to their season. To start off, during their second match of the season, the Gophers defeated Fresno State. Now, that doesn’t normally sound like that exciting of a victory, but Fresno State only dropped two games all season, winning the MWC West, and defeating Boise State and Arizona State to end their season. Minnesota also took back Paul Bunyan’s Axe, when they defeated Wisconsin a few weeks back. Now, these wins are all fine and dandy, but it’s important to note some of Minnesota’s losses as well. They lost pretty handedly (55-31) to Illinois. At this point during the season, Minnesota had dropped five out of six, and Head Coach, P.J. Fleck had a sweltering seat out in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s up and down season can be partially attributed to the loss of their starting freshman quarterback, Zack Annexstad. He had been solid up until his injury vs. Nebraska. He was replaced by, Tanner Morgan, also a freshman. Morgan lead the Golden Gophers to a 3-2 record. Whether Annexstad or Morgan was under center, it was extremely difficult for Minnesota to find consistent offense all season. One of the lone bright spots was the emergence of another Freshman. Running Back, Mohamed Ibrahim, rushed for 936 yards on 171 attempts, despite missing three games. Minnesota played run of the mill defense throughout the season as well. It’s hard to gauge the Gophers, from all the ups and downs they have had all season

Both of these teams are solid football squads. Minnesota tends to do very well against the spread when playing not in their conference, a testament to how hard they fight. Despite this, Minnesota doesn’t stop the run all that well, and Georgia Tech does that better than anyone else in the country. Minnesota’s defense is yielding 170 yards per game on the ground. They bolster a good pass rush, but that will be neutralized as Georgia Tech simply doesn’t throw. I see Georgia Tech sprinting away with this one.

Pick: Georgia Tech -5.5
