Florida International has a major challenge Saturday afternoon when they battle the Miami Hurricanes in a Miami-Dade County football showdown.

FIU made easy work of UMass, defeating them 63-24 for back-to-back wins. QB James Morgan made 17 of 23 completions for 207 yards and two touchdowns in addition to an interception. RB Shawndarrius Phillips did most of the work, leading in rushing and receptions. He had 16 carries for 117 yards and 2 TDs and three receptions for 56 yards. This game is more than any regular game to them or their opponents because there is a history no one wants to see repeated. 2006 was when these neighboring teams first faced off. All seemed well until the game reached near the end of the third quarter. A brawl began to ensue as fists flew, helmets were swung, and players were kicked everywhere. This fight went down in college football infamy.

Miami took out Toledo 49-24 for back-to-back wins as well. QB Malik Rosier continues to showcase improvement after the fallout from the first game of the season against LSU. He went 13-for-23 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore RB DeeJay Dallas led rushers with 17 carries for 110 yards and a touchdown. WR Jeff Thomas led the receivers with five receptions for 105 yards and a TD. Most of their new generation, including Head Coach Mark Richt, have learned about this infamous moment and could only hope it doesn’t happen again. Back in 2006, five Canes and eight FIU players were ejected in the aftermath. Then, 31 players combined were suspended, followed by the dismissals of UM coach Larry Coker and FIU’s Don Strock. Much has changed since then, but this second, historical meeting will bring back memories.

Both teams had a lot to learn and think about since their first meeting. It’s great to see both teams showing some improvement after each of their Week 1 losses. Miami has the better offense when Rozier plays consistently, but they should not sleep on Phillips. He will be FIU’s wild card in this and every game they have this season. The biggest question on everyone’s minds, however, is will both teams keep control of themselves enough to make it through the whole game. The answer to that should be yes. Miami will win, but FIU won’t go down without a fight (metaphorically speaking).

Giovanna’s Pick: Miami -26.5
