The 5-6 Minnesota Golden Gophers take to the road to face the 7-4 Wisconsin Badgers in a Saturday afternoon matchup.
Minnesota has struggled mightily since conference play has rolled around, with their only wins coming against Indiana and Purdue. After starting off solid against some weaker competition, the Golden Gophers have crumbled against the stiffer power-5 conference level opponents they’ve faced since. The Golden Gophers boast a fairly weak defense and will have their hands full with the Badger rushing attack come Saturday. Minnesota gives up nearly 30 points per game and has only posted a quality defensive outing against a singular power-5 school (Purdue). Due to the lack of defense on the Gophers side, this game will likely come down to the Gopher’s ability to keep pace with the Badger’s rushing onslaught en route to a high scoring affair. The Gopher defense will need to make a few key stops in order to pull that off and that is much easier said than done. Winning this game outright would be a massive upset on the Gopher’s behalf. The Gophers haven’t beaten Wisconsin in over a decade and we shouldn’t be expecting that to change come Saturday.
It would be safe to say that Wisconsin is having a bit of a down year. With a mix of quality wins and disappointing losses, the one thing this team hasn’t been is consistent. All that said, Wisconsin is not a team to be overlooked and has the talent to run with just about any program in the country. In typical Wisconsin fashion, the rushing attack leads the way for this team averaging a robust 277.36 yards per game. Minnesota can’t stop a nose bleed, so expect the Badgers to get out and run the football hard. Wisconsin should be able to hold this game comfortably from wire to wire. The key to covering will be which version of the Wisconsin defense decides to show up. If the version that showed up against Iowa and Illinois shows up, the Badgers should cover with ease. Unfortunately, with a team this inconsistent, it is pretty tough to predict which version we get.

A loss for the Badgers here would be catastrophic and the Badgers should win this game, but they do have a tendency to play to the level of their opposition. Covering will be an entirely different question altogether in this matchup. The Gophers won’t be able to stop the Badgers from scoring but should be able to put up enough points of their own to keep this one close. Expect the total to go over in what should be an absolute shootout in Wisconsin. If you’re feeling frisky, I would lean towards the Badgers -10.5, but I say play it safe and stick to the over.
