For many years, the Pittsburgh Panthers were an unaccomplished football program. They have had many ups and downs, but have never broken through to build a consistent reputation. Now, in 2019, Pittsburgh’s season appears to be completely up in the air. Last season, the Panthers utilized a consistent rushing attack in order to offset their lackluster passing play. Similarly, their defense played well against the run and suffered miserably against their opponents’ passing games. However, to everyone’s surprise, Pittsburgh won their division title and surpassed their projected win total by 2 games.
This year, junior quarterback Kenny Pickett will return for a second full season of starting and will have just about every wide receiving targets returning as well. The Panthers’ secondary is also full of experience experienced players. However, Pittsburgh also loses just about all of their best players from last year. Running backs Qadree Ollison and Darris Hall, who combined for 21 touchdowns have departed. Their presence will be sorely missed, as will the presence of Pittsburgh’s four offensive linemen, two of their top defensive linemen, and three of their top linebackers.
Pittsburgh essentially featured a three-headed receiving attack last year, featuring Rafael Araujo-Lopes (who graduated), Senior Tre Tipton and Sophomore Shocky Jacques-Louis. In order to make up for the loss of Araujo-Lopes, Pittsburgh’s coaching staff will need to find another worthy receiver to take his place.
It is no secret that the Panthers like to run the ball. However, considering the running backs that Pittsburgh has lost, this season might be an opportune time for a complete stylistic shift. While the Panthers do in fact possess a variety of quality replacements for Ollison and Hall, there is a significant drop in experience when comparing this year’s backs to their predecessors.
Roster health might tip the balance in terms of depth for Pittsburgh in 2019. In theory, the Panthers could in fact put together a starting lineup made up of entirely juniors and seniors. However, that would mean that their backups are not much more than untested freshmen and sophomores. If one of the starters were to get injured, specifically one of the offensive linemen, Pittsburgh’s season could take a turn for the worst,
While Pittsburgh’s program appears to be trending in the right direction, their schedule in 2019 will likely prevent them from returning to the ACC title game. Even though the Panthers might have one of their highest ceilings under coach Narduzzi, in the last few seasons, having a high ceiling has not been their primary issue. Pittsburgh needs to keep its players on the field, and they need for their young players to have a quick maturation process. While achieving a postseason berth is the Panthers’ objective, winning more than six games might be asking a lot.
