The 9-3 Syracuse Orange roll into their Camping World bowl matchup against the 8-3 West Virginia Mountaineers. Syracuse is making its first bowl appearance since 2013 whereas West Virginia heads to its 5th straight bowl appearance.

Sitting at 9-3 on the year, Syracuse has enjoyed their best season since 2001. After going 4-8 in his first two seasons as head coach, Dino Barbers finally has an Orange team filled with players he recruited and the results are speaking for themselves. Averaging over 40 points per game, the Orange offense is playing at an exceedingly high level and has put up huge numbers against just about every school not named Notre Dame. Quarterback Eric Dungey is the heart and soul of this Syracuse squad, putting up 17 touchdowns and 2565 yards in the air to go with his 15 touchdowns and 732 yards on the ground. A true dual threat quarterback, Dungey provides a matchup nightmare for just about every college football team in the nation. Dungey and the Orange bounced back nicely after their trouncing at the hands of Notre Dame and will likely be fully locked into what will be their biggest bowl game since 2001.

The West Virginia Mountaineers seemed like a lock for an elite bowl before falling in consecutive weeks to end the season at the hands of Oklahoma State and then Oklahoma. Now with star quarterback Will Grier announcing his decision to sit out the Camping World bowl, the Mountaineers are giving off a strong signal that they are phoning this game in. Prior to their end of season struggles, West Virginia had fantastic success on the offensive end behind Grier and his 3864 yards through the air (to go with 37 touchdowns). However, without Grier we don’t have nearly enough of a sample size to gauge exactly what this Mountaineers offense will look like as Grier has been the heart and soul of this team for the past two seasons. What we do know is that they will be running out multiple quarterbacks and a lot of unique looks that they didn’t necessarily need to rely upon during the regular season.

Syracuse comes into this bowl matchup as by far the more motivated squad as they look to cap off this cinderella campaign by matching their best season in nearly two decades. Compare that to the Mountaineers who had their sights set on brighter lights and who will be playing without their offensive catalyst and you have the recipe for a Syracuse win. West Virginia has all the signs of a team that has given up on the season and shouldn’t be trusted in the slightest to keep this game competitive. If Grier was suiting up, this would be an entirely different story as he is one of the best quarterbacks the college game has to offer. West Virginia will still score some points because they are West Virginia, but expect Syracuse to open this game up early and have some fun in their first bowl appearance in 5 years.
