The Colorado Buffaloes play host to the Utah Utes on Saturday for a classic Rumble in the Rockies.

Utah is bowl bound and they still have their sights on the Pac-12 South title after beating Oregon 32-25 last week. Utah was able to do this without two of their best offensive weapons, quarterback Tyler Huntley has a broken collarbone and is out for the reminder of the season while running back Zach Moss is dealing with a knee injury. Moss’s timeline is questionable although head coach Kyle Whittingham has noted the running back may have played his final game in a Utah uniform.

Despite their absence against Oregon, the Utes offense showed no signs of slowing down. Red shirt freshman quarterback Jason Shelley finished the game 18 of 31 with 262 passing yards and an interception in his first start. Shelly was able to find the end zone with a couple touchdowns on the ground including a two-yard touchdown run with 6:48 left in regulation to give the Utes the lead for good. Backup running back Armand Shyne had a career high 174 rushing yards on 26 carriers.

The Utes average 30.5 points per game and 427 total yards per game, however they will be without their starting quarterback and running back moving forward. This will present a challenge if their going to win the Pac-12 South title. Utah still has a chance but they still have to beat Colorado, and Arizona State has to lose one if its next two games against Oregon or Arizona.

Defensively, Utah is very solid they are ranked 10th in the country in stopping the run, only allowing 101.7 yards per game. The Utes are also holding opponents to just 19.7 points per game on 323.7 total yards per game. Colorado started the season 5-0 but has since dropped to 5-5 losing their fifth straight game last week to Washington State 31-7.Buffalo can still become eligible for a bowl game if they beat Utah or California next week.

Buffalo is coming off a loss to the 10th ranked Washington State Cougars. Washington State led by just three at half and only seven heading into the fourth quarter however Colorado had no answers for the Cougars defense in the second half. Colorado was out-gained by a 477-297 margin and lost the turnover battle by 3-0. Star receiver Lavisha Shenault Jr made his return to the lineup and finished the game with 10 receptions for 102-yards but it wasn’t enough to take out the Cougars.

Buffalo has struggled running the ball, ranking eighth in the Pac-12 with 153.4 yards per game. Running back Travon McMillian only has six rushing touchdowns and is averaging 91 yards rushing per game. The lack of a dependable running game has put more pressure on quarterback Steven Montez and the passing game. Montez has completed 66.6 percent of his passes with 17 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Colorado leads the all time series 32-29-3 going all the way back to 1903, and 17-12-1 at home. Although teams stopped playing each after the 1962 meeting, they both joined the Pac-12 in 2011 and since then Utah is 5-2 against Buffalo. That includes a 2-1 record in Boulder, with all three of those games decided by a touchdown or less. With that being said I think this will be a close game. Colorado has struggled tremendously in the last month, but they will be at home against an inexperienced quarterback and running back. Utah is ranked 19th nationally however they have looked vulnerable on the road, i’m taking Colorado in an upset.
