Baylor and Vanderbilt, two teams with the same record, will look to outperform one another when they face off in this year’s Texas Bowl Thursday night.

Baylor prevented a third consecutive loss in their regular season finale when they defeated Texas Tech 35-24. This win made them bowl eligible after winning only one game in last year’s miserable season. QB Charlie Brewer had a 73.3 completion rate with 308 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. John Lovett led rushers with 28 carries for 128 yards and a third-quarter TD. Chris Platt had six receptions for 114 yards. This game is of major importance to 10 fifth-year seniors who went through rough times, including the sexual assualt scandal from more than two years ago. Not to mention again last year’s season when head coach Matt Rhule made his debut. They now have an opportunity to make their last few years of difficulties all worth it.

Vanderbilt defeated and dominated Tennessee 38-13 to secure their 2nd bowl eligibility in three seasons. This victory also marked their third-straight win over the Vols along with the fifth win in the last seven games. QB Kyle Shurmur pulled off an 88.5 completion rate with 367 yards and three touchdowns. Khari Blasingame made 20 carries for 70 yards and a fourth-quarter TD. C.J. Boler led receivers with six receptions for 93 yards. Shurmur has been pulling off varities of plays against the Vols, such as a career-high 416 yards in 2016, four TD passes last year, and his first and only incomplete pass at a home game. He was even sacked three times in this game, but he didn’t quit when things would get rough.

There are a lot of things going into this game. There are two QBs who brought out one good performance after another and gone over 50 perfect completion rate. Both of them will be the key factors to the game’s outcome, but the numbers here could tell people that Shurmur has the better advantage. However, Brewer showed he can hang with the offense and play when it really matters, so you can’t sleep on him too much. The motivation Baylor has to finally have a positive ending from the last few years of mental torment is enough to want to pick up a victory. There will be a lot going on, but Vandy has a lot of pros that will get them farther than Baylor.

My Pick: Vanderbilt -4
