New Year’s Eve for college football means bowl matchups on top of bowl matchups, and today in Tuscon will be a battle between Wyoming and Georgia State. The Cowboys will host the Panthers for the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl. Wyoming closed the regular season with a 20-6 loss to Air Force in November. Georgia State also closed the regular season with a 30-6 loss against Georgia Southern. Wyoming and Georgia State will meet for the first time as Division I programs.
Cowboys Seek Bowl Victory
In the Cowboys last four games of the season, they lost three of those four, including the 20-6 road loss to Air Force. Wyoming is now looking to regroup and close out their season with a bowl victory.
Turnovers and poor defense were the result of their Nov. 30 loss, as they turned the ball over three times, as well as give up 18 first downs.
Offensively, the Cowboys have often switched up their rotation of quarterbacks, as QB Sean Chambers was ruled out of the rest of the season due to an ankle injury. Prior to the injury, he completed 51 of his 121 passes for 915 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. Backup QB Tyler Vander Waal is 49 of 95 for 512 yards, 1 touchdown, and four interceptions, while the current QB Levi Williams is eight of 3 for 109 yards and an interception.
Wyoming, however, does have a trio of consistent running backs to work the ground game. Trey Smith (44 carries, 227 yards, three TDs), Xazavian Valladay (221 carries, 1061 yards, five TDs) and Titus Swen (67 carries, 337 yards, TD) has all lead Wyoming in rushing yards and in carries.
Panthers Seek To Earn School-Record Eighth Win
Like Wyoming, Georgia State has lost the last three of their four games after starting the season 6-2. If Georgia State were to win this game, it would be a school-record eighth win as an FBS program. Even though the Panthers lead the game 7-0 in the first quarter against Georgia Southern, they also gave up 31 points throughout the rest of the game.
QB Dan Ellington has completed 214 of 329 passes for 2,291 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions; he is also second on the team with 596 rushing yards plus five scores. WR Cornelius McCoy leads the team with 65 receptions for 679 yards and four touchdowns. Sam Pinckney (36 grabs, 460 yards, five TDs), TE Roger Carter (25 catches, 291 yards, three TDs) and Jonathan Ifedi (19 catches, 193 yards) are also good targets for Ellington.
Looking at both Wyoming and Georgia State, these are two teams that like to run the football. However, these are also two teams who are poor on defense.. The Panthers are better passing team than Wyoming, who allows over 250 yards per game. The Cowboys, though are 6th in the nation in rushing defense. So for the Cowboys to be the better team in rushing and in rushing defense, expect the Cowboys to use these to their advantage to pull off a bowl victory.
