The Atlanta Braves will take on the Cardinals in the third and final game of a split series tonight after a tough loss at Busch Stadium. Atlanta led all game and looked to take the next step towards a sweep before the Cardinals rallied and came back in the eighth inning where they scored four runs led by a three-run homer thanks to Jedd Gyorko. Mike Soroka came out hot again for the Braves and seems to have incredible potential moving forward. He gave up 6 hits in 5 innings and allowed only one earned run setting up his reliever Dan Winkler with the right scenario to make a save that just wasn’t capitalized on. Nick Markakis led the team batting last night with two hits and a run scored alongside Austin Riley who went 1-4 but batted in one of only three runs scored by the Braves. Despite last nights loss, the Braves are 7-10 in their last ten games and still look like the team to beat in the NL East. Everyone is gonna have an off night here and there. Tonight Julio Teheran will get the start for the Braves and looks to close out another series win. Teheran has pitched 5.2 innings and allowed 1.59 earned runs in the past seven days and 22.2 innings total with a 0.79 ERA in May. Compared to the way he played in April allowing 5.35 earned runs, Teheran is playing really good baseball right now and the Cardinals should be worried about him on the mound this evening. Teheran struggles with consistency but can get very hot and although is disliked by many Braves fans is one of the few gleams of veteran hope in their bullpen. The Braves bats should heat up again tonight as last night was an out of character performance for a team that usually hits well against this Cardinals team.
The St. Louis Cardinals also look to take the series win this evening after a big win last night. Paul Goldschmidt and Matt Carpenter led the charge each getting three hits paving the way perfectly for Jedd Gyorko‘s three-run homer while Andrew Miller kept the Braves scoreless in the eighth allowing Jordan Hicks to come through with a save. Last nights win brings the Cards to just four wins in their last ten during this rough month of May and a series win here could be the perfect start to a pretty easy schedule in June. Tonight Jack Flaherty will take the mound and hopes to do just what Dakota Hudson and company were able to do last night in shutting down a top tier Braves lineup. Flaherty has pitched on average 6 innings and allowed 3 earned runs in the last week and in total has pitched 22.2 innings with a 4.37 ERA in the month of May. Not stellar but if the Cardinals bats are flying again tonight three earned runs could just maybe cut it and go into their rare memorial day bye with a series win.

It seems that this year the Braves struggle to lose a series and it’s just about the opposite for the Cardinals. Acuna had an off night last night which is incredibly rare and things will pick up again for him tonight. Austin Riley continues to be superhuman in his early rookie campaign and tonight should be no different, a run will be scored because of this kid. I’ve said in past articles when the Cardinals hit well they score runs and A LOT of them, but when they don’t its bad. Sadly for them, they have been incredibly inconsistent and haven’t performed well in back to back games all month. In fact, they haven’t won multiple games in a row since their five-game run from April 27th to May 1st whereas the Braves have won all but two series in the month of May. I see these trends continuing tonight due to no major points hinting at any change.
