The Chicago Cubs will send their new acquisition Cole Hamels to start his first game in a Cubs uniform. The Cubs have beenone of the best teams in the National league and look to make a World Series run after winning it all in 2016. With acquiring Hamels, they are getting a pitcher who has not been the pitcher he used to be as he allowed 7 runs in 5 innings in the loss against the Athletics and has struggled this season since coming off an oblique strain in May. The Cubs are in an interesting firestorm as Alex Rodriguez made comments about Yu Darvish being a distraction and Joe Maddon responding back.

The Pirates have been hot recently winning fourteen of their last seventeen games and have won nine of eleven at home. They decided to go out and try to reinforce their starting rotation with getting Chris Archer from the Rays and also Keone Kela from the Rangers at the trade deadline on Tuesday. The move signals they are chasing a playoff spot and now will start Nick Kingham who hasn’t had a stellar year sitting at 5-5 this year and was chased after 3 innings against the Mets his last time out with 6 earned runs and 4 walks. The Pirates have gotten weaker in their batting lineup with Corey Dickerson being place on the 10-day disabled list with a hamstring injury. He has led the Pirates in batting average and 4th in the national league.

The Cubs are tied for the lead in the NL Central with the Milwaukee Brewers but enter Wednesday leading the Pirates by six games. The Pirates sit three games out of the NL wild card and are 7-3 in their last 10 and have National league’s best record since July 8. The Pirates won last night’s game 5-4 at home against Chicago. The Cubs had left 7 runners on base and have dropped 3 of 4 but Javier Baez was a bright spot going 3 for 4 with his 22nd home run on the year. The Cubs will need their starting rotation to get a lift and Hamels should provide a boost in the short term at least. The Cubs will rebound tonight with Hamels pitching well and making a good first impression and Kingham struggling.

#Cubs Maddon on Trout contract: "He deserves it. If you're going to spend that kind of dough on anybody, that would be the guy to spend it on, I think because of what he's done, the years he's had."

#Cubs Strop (hamstring) threw bullpen today. All went well but Maddon says they'll be careful

There's been no talk with #Cubs re: possible extension for Bryant, who'd like to stay. "Everybody in this clubhouse would want to finish their careers with this team, myself included." He's free agent after 2021

#Cubs Bryant on Trout's reported extension: "Obviously, he deserves every penny of it and more. The guy's been the best player in baseball. He's probably one of the best players ever. He obviously likes it in L.A. and now he's there forever. It's pretty cool. I'm happy for him."

Morrow says #Cubs have plenty of options to close games while he continues rehab. "I think we're pretty well set up. Every arm helps. I think people get nervous about quote-unquote closers. We've got a lot of guys who can handle it."
