The Cubs took game one of a three-game series by a score of 10-2.
Shortstop Nico Hoerner made his major league debut on Monday night, and he did not disappoint. He went 3-5 with four RBIs and scored twice. Hoerner replaced the injured Javier Baez and Addison Russell.
Adding to the offense was Nicholas Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber who both homered in the win. In total, the Cubs had 15 hits and went 3-14 with runners in scoring position.
Kyle Hendricks made the start, giving up seven hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Four Cubs relievers took the mound and only allowed two hits while striking out four.
The Padres pushed across two runs on nine hits. Nine San Diego runners were left on base while batters went 1-5 with runners in scoring position. Left fielder Nick Martini went 3-5 while superstar Manny Machado went 2-3.
Starter Cal Quantrill pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Reliever Robbie Erlin two runs on three hits in the one inning he pitched.
Chicago is now two games above the Brewers in the second NL Wild Card spot. St. Louis still leads the NL Central by four games.
Starting for the Cubs will be Jose Quintana. The righty is 13-8 with a 4.00 ERA in 27 starts. He pitched against the Padres on July 20, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out seven in five innings. Quintana pitched five innings against the Brewers on Thursday when he allowed four runs on five hits.
The Padres will send out Ronald Bolanos for his second career start. The righty made his major league debut last Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. He gave up two runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out four over six innings.
