Chicago Cubs vs. San Diego Padres

Chicago Cubs (76-66) at San Diego Padres (66-76)

MLB Baseball: Monday, September 9, 2019 10:10 PM EST (Petco Park)

Line & Odds: Cubs (+110), Padres (-130) – Over/Under 8.5

The Cubs and Padres kick off a three-game series in San Diego on Monday night.

The two teams played a three-game set back in July. Chicago came away with the series victory, winning two games at Wrigley Field.

Chicago went 1-3 in a series loss against the Brewers over the weekend but still hold the second National League Wild Card spot by 1 1/2 games over the Diamondbacks. The Cubs trail the Cardinals in the NL Central by 4 1/2 games.

The team from the Windy City is 5-5 in its last 10 games. Injuries have come at seemingly the worst possible time. Shortstop Javier Baez suffered a hairline fracture in his left thumb, Addison Russell, Baez’s backup, left Sunday’s game after being hit by a pitch, and Kris Bryant did not play on Sunday due to a sore knee.

As for the Padres, playoff hopes are slim to none. They currently trail the second Wild Card spot by 10 games with only a few series left on the season. San Diego is 5-5 in its last 10, winning the final two games in a three-game set against the Rockies after being swept in three games by the Diamondbacks.

The Padres have not made the playoffs since 2006. However, players such as Eric Hosmer and Fernando Tatis Jr. have given the team hope at the plate. Tatis Jr. was recently placed on the 60-day IL due to a back injury. The starting rotation for the Padres has struggled all season. A redeeming quality in San Diego’s pitching staff comes in the form of closer Kirby Yates who made the All-Star team this season and leads the league in saves.

Starting for the visiting Cubs will be Kyle Hendricks. He is 9-9 with a 3.39 ERA in 26 starts. In his only start against the Padres this season, the righty allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings. Hendricks has allowed seven runs and 11 hits in 10 2/3 innings over his last two starts.

Rookie Cal Quantrill will start for San Diego. The righty is 6-6 with a 4.57 ERA in 20 appearances, 15 of which were starts. Quantrill has allowed 16 runs on 18 hits in 9 1/3 inning during his last two starts.
