Detroit Tigers (36-39) at Cleveland Indians (40-33)

MLB Baseball: Friday, June 22, 2018 at 7:10 pm EST (Progressive Field)

Line: Detroit Tigers +181 / Cleveland Indians -193

Over/Under: 9.5

The Cleveland Indians look to stay ahead of the Detroit Tigers in the battle for supremacy in the American League Central division as the two teams open a three-game series tonight at Progressive Field.

The Indians have been on a roll of late and continue to separate themselves from the rest of the AL Central division. They have won four straight games leading into the matchup versus the Tigers and have been dialed in at the plate, scoring an average of seven runs during the impressive winning streak. Their pitching has also been strong during the four-game stretch, giving up just 1.5 runs per game. The team is in the midst of a nine-game home stand; currently, Cleveland is 4-2 through six games in the friendly confines of Progressive Field. With three games slotted against the second-place Tigers this weekend, the Indians have one of the best opportunities of the season to take firm control of first place in the AL Central. Starting on the mound tonight for Cleveland is newcomer Shane Bieber. The right-hander makes his third start of the season after being picked up for his stellar outings in the minor leagues. He holds a 1-0 individual record and a 3.97 ERA after picking up a win in an excellent showing against the Minnesota Twins on June 17.

Meanwhile, the Tigers come into the series attempting to recapture momentum after losing two straight games against the Cincinnati Reds. Before suffering the pair of consecutive losses, the Tigers rattled off five straight victories, including a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox playing at Guaranteed Rate Field. The biggest difference from the turnaround of fortunes for Detroit was the performance of the pitching staff. During the five-game winning streak, the Tigers dominated with their throws and surrendered just 2.4 runs per game. However, in the two losses against the Reds, Detroit’s pitchers failed to find a rhythm and gave up a staggering 14 total runs. The Tigers’ starters look to recover in the three-game road series against the Indians and propel the team closer to Cleveland in the standings. Making the start for the Tigers tonight is right-hander Mike Fiers. The eight-year veteran makes his 14th outing on the mound and posts an ERA of 4.09 on the season. After struggling against the White Sox on June 15, Fiers seeks a bounceback performance to improve upon a 5-4 indivudual record.

Cover The Spread 365 MLB Betting Trends:

4-0 in their last 4 games overall

6-1 in their last 7 games to open a series

20-6 in their last 26 home games against Detroit

5-0 in Fiers’ last 5 starts

5-0 in their last 5 games against the American League Central division

5-2 in their last 7 games overall

The Indians come into the series looking much stronger on both ends of the ball in games of late than the Tigers have. They have homefield advantage and a grand opportunity to cement their place as the top team in the AL Central. With the way the teams have been playing and the considerable stakes involved, take the Indians at -193.
