The Tigers and Angels clash Wednesday in an American League battle pitting two teams that have been all but eliminated from the AL playoff race.

The Detroit Tigers have struggled mightily in their 2018 campaign. On Wednesday, they’ll send the southpaw Blaine Hardy to the bump for the second game of the series. Hardy is one of the club’s few bright spots in the starting rotation, especially considering the recent trade that sent the resurgent Mike Fiers to Oakland. Hardy took a no-hit bid into the 7th last week against the Athletics, posting his second consecutive impressive start since being moved from the bullpen. It will be interesting to see how deep Hardy is able to get into the ballgame after his longest outing of the season last Friday, especially considering the toll last night’s contest took on the Detroit bullpen. Offensively, the Tigers have been atrocious all season, ranked next to last in total offense. Since Miguel Cabrera went down, Nick Castellanos (.286 BA, 16 HR, 59 RBI) has been Detroit’s only reliable source of run production. Jose Iglesias and Leonys Martin will have to produce on Wednesday for the Tigers to be successful.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels have been mired in mediocrity ever since Shohei Ohtani strained his elbow in June. Wednesday starter Jaime Barria has been a model of consistency for a club all season. In 16 starts, Barria has thrown at least 5 complete innings 14 times. Meanwhile, the right-hander hasn’t surrendered more than 4 runs in an outing since mid-June. Offensively, the Angels have been solid in 2018, but their lineup is undoubtedly top-heavy. Mike Trout (.309 BA, .459 OBP, 30 HR) is having another incredible year but hasn’t driven in nearly the number of runs you’d expect. Meanwhile, Andrelton Simmons (.308 BA, 53 RBI) is quietly having his most productive offensive season of his career, and Shohei Ohtani (.273 BA) has come as advertised at the dish. All three will need to contribute Wednesday.

The Angels are strongly favored Wednesday, as they should be. They have the more proven starter on the bump and a far superior offense. By many metrics, this Angels team is a lot better than their record indicates. After getting to the Detroit bullpen early last night, I see Los Angeles doing the same on Wednesday. I’ll take the Angels and the OVER in this one.

Pick: Los Angeles -153

[email protected] option RHPs Taylor Cole, Osmer Morales to Triple-A Salt Lake; recall RHPs Odrisamer Despaigne, Deck McGuire from Triple-A; outright RHP Dayan Diaz to Inland Empire.

I’m not in Texas this weekend, but we do have a writer there and I will tweet his stories. I’ll be back when the #Angels play at Arizona on Tuesday.

[email protected] place RHP Hansel Robles (right shoulder impingement) on 10-day DL; recall RHP Ty Buttrey from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Tragedy strikes #Angels with death of Aaron Cox, 24, the brother-in-law of CF Mike Trout and a pitching prospect in the system. "We have to deal with it and grieve and continue to be professionals," SS Andrelton Simmons said. "It's part of the job."

Rene Rivera said that was "awesome." His homer helped the #Angels to a sweep of the Padres.

@Titans WR @SilentGrind2 catches the eye of @KingJames:

#Titans DL @Jurrellc gave a salute at the end of the national anthem Saturday night.

Vrabel said that Kenneth Durden earned his opportunity to play with second group at CB last night by batting down several passes in practice. Played 40 snaps after being brought in about a week and a half ago to #Titans camp.

Vrabel said Quinton Spain has done well, said he enjoys coaching him and seeing if #Titans can continue improving his skill set. Without saying it, Vrabel basically declared him as still the starter at left guard.

Deontay Burnett is down for the #titans. He looked to be hurt on the play before, but stayed in.
