The Detroit Tigers host the Cleveland Indians Friday night to kick off a three game series between the AL Central rivals.
The Detroit Tigers enter Friday night’s game with a record of 25-40, putting them fourth in the AL Central. The team returns home after a three game series in Kansas City in which they won once and dropped the other two games. In their most recent outing, the Tigers lost 7-3 on Thursday; the three runs the team put up all came after the Royals had already scored their seven runs for the night. Over the course of the season the Tigers have mostly struggled at the plate, ranking 26th in batting average and on base percentage while sitting last in the league in runs scored. The clear issue for the Tigers this season has been their lack of power at the plate, ranking 29th in the league for home runs on the season, the unit is one of only three teams who still have yet to have a batter with double digit home runs. The Tigers will hope to get their bats going in hopes of starting off the series with a win Friday night.
LHP Ryan Carpenter will start things off for the Tigers, entering the game he holds a 1-3 record with a 7.89 ERA. The 28 year old had put together a few great starts for the club, but in his most recent start Carpenter only pitched 3.2 innings and allowed eight runs in that time. In his six starts the lefty has seen his share of struggles but hopes are that he will return to his previous form the club got to experience prior to the Minnesota game.
The Cleveland Indians currently sit at second in the AL Central with a 34-33 record. The team enters Friday night’s game on a day’s rest after a two game home stand against the Cincinnati Reds where the clubs split. In Wednesday’s game, the Indians lost 7-2. Despite their record being much better, the Indians also have a large majority of their struggles coming at the plate. The club currently ranks 22nd in on base percentage, 24th in runs scored, and 28th in batting average. Despite their struggles the Indians will look for some support at the plate from their lineup Friday night.
Getting the nod to start for the Indians will be RHP Adam Plutko, who enters the game with a 2-1 record and a 5.19 ERA. The 27 year old will be making his second start since rejoining the rotation after being sent down to the AAA following his abysmal start on May 23rd against Tampa Bay where he allowed seven runs in 5.1 innings pitched. In his latest outing, Plutko faced off against the New York Yankees where he lasted six innings and only allowed two runs. The limited sample size makes the 5.19 ERA worrisome, but Plutko’s record is pretty indicative of how he performed in that outing, and the right hander will look to add a third good outing to his season résumé on Friday night.

In a division match up we should see a lot of intensity between the two clubs. In Friday night’s game we see two teams who struggle at the plate going against Pitchers who have been inconsistent over the course of the season. I choose to be optimistic for the pitchers and with that, say give me the under.
