Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays
MLB Regular Season, Thursday, Rogers Centre Toronto, Canada at 8:07 PM (EDT)
The Line: Toronto Blue Jay +125 / Boston Red Sox -145 O/U: 10
When the Boston Red Sox last saw Clay Buchholz, the right-hander's time in the major leagues appeared close to the end -- a once-promising career derailed by injury. Now, three years later, Buchholz is still in the league, and he faces his former club for the first time as his Toronto Blue Jays host the Red Sox in the finale of a three-game series Thursday.
The Red Sox lost both of the opening two games, will they be able to win this one?
Little has gone right for the reigning World Series champion Red Sox, whose chances of defending that title have dwindled to a precious few as they entered play Wednesday night nine games behind Oakland for the second wild-card spot with 17 to play. A rotation that has been both injury-ravaged and ineffective has resorted to using multiple openers down the stretch, with Jhoulys Chacin (0-0, 0.00 ERA) a reclamation project after being released by the Milwaukee Brewers last month. The right-hander was called up from the minors when the rosters were expanded and has acquitted himself well in two outings, tossing three shutout innings. Chacin had a 17-pitch effort Sunday night against the New York Yankees and will be an opener for the second time after tossing two hitless frames in the opener of that wraparound series Friday night.
