Houston Astros: The Houston Astros will look to complete the sweep of the Tigers after taking game two in convincing fashion by a final score of 11-4 on Tuesday. Houston powered their way to a sixth straight win, thanks to the long ball. The Astros entered Tuesday’s action with a hefty 6.5-game lead over the Angels in the AL West race. Houston received homers from Jake Marisnick (his fourth), Robinson Chirinos (his sixth), Aledmys Diaz (his fourth) and Alex Bregman (his 13th) in the victory as their recent power surge continued. The offensive outburst was enough for Brad Peacock (4-2) to get the win. He threw five innings, allowing a run on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts before turning things over to the bullpen.
Michael Brantley had a double and two RBIs while George Springer blasted a solo home run and Yuli Gurriel chipped in an RBI of his own in the win. Josh Reddick went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles while Tony Kemp tripled and Alex Bregman chipped in a base hit as well. Wade Miley got the win to improve to 4-2 on the year after allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five over six innings of work.
Justin Verlande will take the hill for his 10th start of the season as he faces his former team. He comes in 6-1 with a 2.51 ERA, a 0.82 WHIP, 14 walks and 68 strikeouts over 57.1 innings of work on the year. Verlander earned the win in his last start, which came Friday against the Rangers at home. He threw seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts in a 3-0 Houston triumph. Verlander is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP, five walks and 22 strikeouts over 19.1 innings in his last three starts.
Detroit Tigers: The Tigers, on the other hand, will look to rebound and salvage a win after dropping the first two games of the series, including Tuesday’s defeat. Detroit was toppled in the opening game of this series as they were overpowered by a tough Houston lineup. The Tigers entered Tuesday 6.5 games behind the Twins in the AL Central and hope to gain some ground. Detroit finished with five hits in the contest: Ronny Rodriguez and Josh Harrison each had two hits in the contest. Grayson Grenier drove in the lone Detroit run in the fourth inning. Matthew Boyd (4-3) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts over four innings of work.
Nick Castellanos, Brandon Dixon and Niko Goodrum each had base hits as well in the losing effort for Detroit. Ryan Carpenter took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits while striking out five over four innings of work.
It’s projected that perhaps Nick Ramirez will get the ball here for his second appearance and first start of the year. He comes in with no record, a 2.25 ERA, a 1.75 WHIP, one walk and five strikeouts in the majors. Ramirez didn’t factor in the decision in his big league debut, which came in relief against the Twins Saturday. He threw four innings, allowing a run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in an 8-3 Tigers loss. In his second major league outing and first start, he would pitch against the Astros and at Comerica Park for the first time. Ramirez is 19-8 with four saves, a 2.53 ERA, a 1.187 WHIP, 63 walks and 137 strikeouts over 171 innings in 93 appearances, seven starts, in the minor leagues.

JV has been a mixed bag in his first two starts against his former team, but he’s allowed one run or less in five of his last six starts. Soto on the other hand, got torched for seven runs in four innings in his major league debut against Minnesota, and frankly Astros on a completely different level than Minnesota right now.
