The Houston Astros are among the best teams in baseball again this season.  They will take on the Oakland Athletics Wednesday night in Oakland in the second game of a three game set.

The Athletics are staying afloat this season with their record just over .500.  Jedd Lowrie has undoubtably been their leader on offenses this season with nine homers, 42 RBI and a slash line of .285/.349/.466.  He leads the team with 72 hits and 17 doubles.  Kris Davis has been their best power hitter, though, with a team high 17 home runs and 46 RBI.  Davis also has the best OPS on the team, just ahead of Lowrie, at .834.  Matt Olson and Matt Chapman are also having decent years offensively, combining for 23 homers and 58 RBI, creating a balanced offense.  On the pitching side, they have three solid starters and two rotation spots that have been shaky.  Paul Blackburn will be making his second start of the season on Wednesday for the A’s.  In his first start he went six innings and only allowed one run on three hits.  He will look to carry that momentum into the game Wednesday against one of the best offenses in baseball.

That offense belongs to the Houston Astros.  The Stros have scored the third most runs in all of baseball this season behind only the Yankees and Red Sox.  They also are in the top five in baseball for average, on-base and slugging percentage.  Jose Altuve is a big part of all those statistics.  He’s been the team’s spark plug again this season with his .342/.388/.471 slash line, league leading 93 hits, 40 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.  Altuve isn’t alone in the lineup though.  George Springer is having another monster year.  His 14 home runs, 41 RBI, 51 runs scored and .885 OPS are all good for team highs.  If those two guys weren’t enough, Max Stassi, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa all have OPS’ north of .800.  The offense is good enough by itself to make Houston a playoff team, regardless, they also have the best rotation in all of baseball.  They have four guys with 7 or more wins, two of the four have ERA’s in the 2s and one, Justin Verlander has a sub-two ERA at 1.45.  Gerrit Cole is one of those four guys and one of the two with the sub three ERA at 2.16.  Cole will take his 7-1 record into Wednesday night’s matchup with the A’s in hopes of tying Justin Verlander for the team lead with 8 wins.

Everything points towards Houston in this game.  The pitching matchup is in their favor with a solidified CY Young contender in Gerrit Cole going against a potentially good starter in Paul Blackburn who will be making just his second start in 2018.  The trends also favor the Stros as they’ve been very good ATS this season.  I am taking the Astros to cover the -1.5 run spread in this one.
