FREE MLB PICK: Kansas City Royals vs Detroit Tigers

This is a matchup of bottom of the barrel MLB teams. The Royals and Tigers are part of the weak AL Central division that has four under .500 teams in it. It’s hard to believe that both these teams reached the World Series at least once in the past six seasons and now the teams have really dropped off the contending board. Kansas City had a couple 80 win seasons the last few years and are now back to a 100 loss season, for the first time since the mid 2000s, where they had a stretch of four 100 loss seasons in five years. The Royals will be looking to rebuild this offseason, before things stay in the gutter for awhile. Meanwhile, the Tigers lost 98 games last season and are on there way to getting close to that number this season. Detroit has eight games left in the season and will look to finish the year strong. Saturdays starters are Jakob Junis (8-12, 4.42 ERA) vs Jordan Zimmermann (7-8, 4.41 ERA)

The Kansas City Royals have two away games left in the 2018 season and they will look to get a few more wins to this ugly season. The Royals have the second worst road record in the majors at (23-54) and are 4-6 in their last ten games. Kansas City lost game one of this series 11-8 and won game two 4-3. Royal blue has shown early offense in this series by scoring early in the games an they have 21 hits total so far. However, from the fifth inning on, they have only managed to score one run and go flat. Kansas City only has two hitters above the .250 line and that is Whit Merrifield (.302) and Adalberto Mondesi (.288). These two guys helped score some runs in last nights game and will set the table for the rest of the lineup today. Everyone else in the lineup is was below the .250 line and anyone of them can maybe get that big hit with runners in scoring position, you just never know. Jakob Junis has been all over the place in his starts this season. He has had stretches of good and bad starts. In three September starts, Junis has a 1-0 record and a 3.50 ERA. He has given up five homeruns in his last two starts and seven runs total. So, look for more homerun balls given up in game three. However, Junis has beaten the Tigers twice this season going 14 innings and giving up only two runs.

The Detroit Tigers have two home games left in the 2018 season and they will look to give their fans a reason to celebrate a little bit. Yes, the Tigers have had another bad season, but it’s always a good feeling to end the season on a little winning streak. Detroit would like to get some winning going with the way they have been playing recently. The Tigers were swept by the Houston Astros, took two of three from the Cleveland Indians, and then swept by the Minnesota Twins. Detroit so far has split the first two games of this series and will look to win both games over the weekend. The team has showed that they can match the Royals bats and the Tigers have scored throughout the games.

In yesterdays game, Detroit was down 4-0 after four innings. The Tigers roared back with some scattered runs and almost pulled off the comeback. Detroit has one amazing hitter in their lineup and that is Nicholas Castellanos, who has 22 homeruns, 85 RBIs, and a .300 average on the season. Castellanos drove in two runs for Detroit last night and will most likely drive in more runs today, since he is the offense. Everyone else in the lineup is batting in the low .200s or lower than that. Jordan Zimmermann hasn’t pitched well since joining the Tigers in 2016 and is far from his dominant self, from the time he pitched for the Washington Nationals. September has been his worst month of the season, as he has a 5.93 ERA and has given up four homeruns in his last two starts. Also, he hasn’t gone deep in a game since August. Against the Royals this season,he has shut them out and has given up two homeruns, and four runs. Both those starts were on the road and maybe he can pitch well in the pitcher friendly Comerica Park.

Cover the Spread 365

So, these two teams haven’t had much to play for this season, but they can still play for pride. There will continue to be minor league players in both lineups and they will be trying to show their potential for next season. This game will have a few long balls hit in it, as both starters have given up nine total combined homeruns in their last few outings. Both these teams have put up the hits so far in these series and expect the same in today’s game with two struggling starters. The Royals are favored to win this game because Jakob Junis has pitched lights out baseball against the Tigers. Both these teams will get some runs early in this game, since that has been the theme of the series thus far. The Royals will win 5-2 because of a couple big homeruns and Junis pitching deep into the game. Kansas City will cover the spread.
