Fourteen runs were the difference in Monday's contest between the Dodgers and Phillies. It would be fair to say that this game was a blowout and some. The Dodgers drove in run after run while the Phillies struggled to get runners on base each inning. Every non-pitcher player for the Dodgers recorded at least one hit, with multiple coming from seven of them. It took three innings to see runs on the scoreboard for either team, and it was the Phillies who struck first. A 415-foot home run from Scott Kingery gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth, but in the top of that inning, the Dodgers would manage to score six runs and never looked back. With a Double from Justin Turner and four singles, the Dodgers were looking at a 5-1 lead with two outs. With two outs, Austin Barnes was on third and Joc Pederson was on third. As the pitch came, Pederson took off for second and caused the throw to second from J.T. Realmuto, while Realmuto was throwing to second, Austin Barnes headed home from third and successfully stole, giving the Dodgers a 6-1 lead.
The next three runs that the Dodgers scored were home runs, two from Cody Bellinger and one from Max Muncy. The two from Bellinger gave him a one home run lead on reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich as the league leader. Then with two doubles, a walk, a home run, a single, and a sacrifice fly, the Dodgers scored another seven runs in the eighth and ninth innings to score a total of 16 runs on 19 hit. This was an extremely impressive game by the Dodgers, and this really shows why they are favorites to win the World Series. With an incredible pitching rotation headlined by Clayton Kershaw, and a whole arsenal of great hitters lead by possible 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger, the Dodgers are sitting pretty atop of the MLB.
For the Phillies, this will be a game they will want to forget and put behind them as soon as possible. Only four Phillies players were able to record at least one hit, that is embarrassing. Yes, they may have been playing against the best team in the MLB record-wise, but that is still no excuse for getting only four hits. With a team as talented as they are and with the expectations of winning the NL East at the beginning of the season, the Phillies sure are disappointing their fans so far.
With the way this series is going, the Phillies should get swept or at least lost three of the four games, they will be under .500 by a game. This puts them in a terrible position as we get closer and closer to the to September. The wonderful thing about sports though, is that it doesn't matter when you win your games, as long as you win them, so if the Phillies are able to have a fantastic second half of the year, the first half of the year that was so disappointing won't mean as much, after all, a win is a win.
