MLB Picks Cincinnati Reds vs Los Angeles Dodgers

I’m sure I speak for the majority here when I say that I’m over Spring Training and that the itch for Opening Day is getting stronger and stronger. However, the reality is that we’re still two weeks away and there’s more Spring Training games to take in. Tonight, we have a good matchup on deck in what should be an intriguing Friday night duel between the Dodgers and Reds. Last night ended in a tie between these two, so hopefully we’ll be graced with an actual winner tonight. Let’s take a look at both teams.

LA Dodgers

Well where do I start with this team? To sum it up, it’s championship or bust for the Dodgers. The guys in blue and white have made it to the playoffs six straight years and two back-to-back World Series later, they still can’t buy a ring. With such high expectations coming into the 2019 season, there’s going to be pressure mounting. There’s no doubt that this team should win the NL West and coast into a deep playoff run. If they aren’t raising the World Series trophy by season’s end, the season will be a failure. That’s sort of unfair and tough to say, but hey life isn’t fair.

This crew has had decent success in Spring Training so far, going a solid 10-8. They’ve been battling the injury bug a bit with Max Muncy (forearm), Clayton Kershaw, who’s dealing with a shoulder issue and trying to get ready for Opening Day, and their young stud shortstop Corey Seager, who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery and a minor hip issue. Although they’re being hampered by these injuries, they’ve found a bit of success from an unexpected source in Kike Hernandez who’s slashing an impressive .371/.395/.714 in 35 at-bats this spring. Hernandez also has drove in a team-leading 11 RBI’s. Big Red (Justin Turner) has also been locked in, hitting .429 to along with four doubles and 11 runs.

Cincinnati Reds

With a re-tooled roster, the Reds shouldn’t be looking at 95 losses again this season. It’s hard to fathom the Reds being any good because it feels like this team has been as bad as Pete Rose’s reputation for decades. I mean it’s been nearly 30 years since they’ve even sniffed October. However, this team could be turning a new leaf and might be heading in a positive direction. Ironically, they went out and plucked Yasiel Puig away from the Dodgers and will be using him against them in this matchup. I’m sure Puig will be loving his at-bats against his former squad.

So far this spring, the Reds have been hitting well as a team tallying a combined .256 average and 23 total round trippers. They’ve seen their key additions perform exactly how they’ve wanted. Aforementioned Yasiel Puig has been money at the plate hitting .346 in his 11 games played, while Matt Kemp has been even more impressive, swinging to the tune of three home runs, eight RBI’s and a .375 average. Joey Votto has been struggling in his limited time, but he’s a veteran and shouldn’t have any troubles heading into the regular season. On the other side of the ball, the Reds pitching has struggled, turning a 4.98 ERA and an awful 1.38 WHIP. Sonny Gray, the big addition from a trade with Yankees this offseason, has looked sharp in his two starts, mostly due to his success attacking the zone and throwing quality strikes.

Last night’s game between these two teams ended up in a tie, you have to love baseball games ending in a tie…feels like you’re watching a regular season Cleveland Browns game. All jokes aside, The Reds apparently love tying games this spring as they have four total this spring. However, I am intrigued by Tanner Roark taking the mound for the Reds tonight, he’s got a good repertoire of strikeout pitches and he’s going to be pivotal to the Reds rotation this season. I can’t say I’m leaning heavily towards one team here due to the fact that the Dodgers haven’t been employing a normal starting lineup, but I feel the Dodgers are the team you will want to bet on for this evening.
