The San Diego Padres were able to steal a win from the Dodgers last night. They scored once in the seventh to tie the game and once in the eighth to pull themselves ahead. Clayton Richard got the definition of a quality start for the Padres, going six innings and giving up three runs with five strikeouts. Brad Hand got a four out save with three strikeouts for San Diego after blowing his fourth save of the season on Thursday. The Padres scored three out of their four runs through the long ball yesterday, but it worked out for them in the end. Manuel Margot had a tremendous night with two game-tying home runs and Jose Pirela added a solo shot in the eighth to put them ahead for good. The Padres are sending out Jhoulys Chacin as the starter in hopes that he can help win the series against the Dodgers for them. Although he has pitched against the Dodgers before, the results are varied. He got shelled on opening day against L.A by giving up nine runs, but since then he has only given up a single run through more than 10 innings pitched against them.
The Los Angeles Dodgers took the loss last night, but their primary concern is the health of Rich Hill. While making an attempt to sacrifice bunt, Rich Hill got hit with a pitch in the neck/throat region. He was down on the ground for some time while Dodgers manager David Roberts and the doctor went out to take care of him. Amazingly, he stayed in the game and finished off his start, going six innings and only giving up two runs while striking out nine batters. He was taken to a hospital after the game for precautionary tests, but it appears Hill has avoided any serious injuries that could send him to the DL. Unfortunately, Rich Hill couldn’t get the win last night because the bullpen failed to hold on to the lead. Ross Stripling got his second blown save of the season by giving up home runs to Margot and Pirela. Cody Bellinger led the team on the offensive side of the ball for the Dodgers with three hits and 2 RBI’s. The catcher Austin Barnes also contributed an RBI for the team, but it wasn’t enough in the end. Hyun-Jin Ryu will look to turn things around and even up the series for the Dodgers in game 2. Ryu is coming off one of the best starts of his career, giving up only a single hit and striking out eight through seven innings pitched against the Mets in Citi Field.

Although both pitchers have been doing well recently, the edge goes to Ryu in this matchup. He currently has a string of at least 15 consecutive scoreless innings pitched and through his last six starts he carries a 2.08 ERA. Also, the last time Chacin pitched against the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium was opening day where he gave up nine runs to L.A. Combined with the dismal Padres’ record away from home and the Dodgers playing over .750 at home, the Los Angeles Dodgers should be able to even up the series tonight.
