ESPN MLB Picks Houston Astros vs. New York Mets

The Mets and the Astros face off in what should be a beautiful spring training afternoon. The Mets are coming into this game with a .500 record, going up against either the best or second best team in the AL. Should be a great game between two exciting franchises.

The Astros

The Astros are the favorite in the AL. I understand that the Boston Red Sox are coming off one of the greatest seasons in recent history, but the Astros continue to retool and compete for a championship every season. They lost Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton to free agency, but they still support one of the best rotations in the AL. Any pitching lineup that bolsters Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole is going to be fine.

The Astros rotation is backed by a top three lineup. Tomorrow, they will be without Jose Altuve, their defacto captain, who is nursing some injuries (doesn’t really want to play). When the regular season starts however tread lightly with this lineup. Outside of former MVP Altuve, Houston employs Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and George Springer, all of whom will most likely be in the All-Star game. These four guys can go toe to toe with anyone in the league. Nick Tanielu, third baseman, has been one of the standouts so far this preseason. His batting average is .360, with three home runs and 10 runs batted in. Guy has been a standout, hope to see more of Tanielu soon as a full-time MLB player.

The Mets

The Mets have been one of most exciting teams this offseason. They started it all off by hiring a shiny new General Manager to revamp the lineup. Brodie Van Wagenen, was the man the Mets owners decided to run their franchise, the only problem is that he was an agent before becoming the General Manager. This has never happened before in sports, so the Mets were taking a huge risk on Van Wagenen.

So far, BVW has played his part perfectly. He went out this offseason and got plenty of pieces to help the Mets compete this season. They grabbed Edwin Diaz, who was the saves leader of the 2018 season. He was dominant and will continue to improve in Queens this season. They also addressed part of their hitting woes of last season, trading for a veteran superstar in Robinson Cano. Cano can still hit with the best of them and will be an immediate impact in the middle of the Mets lineup. The guy to highlight this spring is Peter Alonso. He and Dom Smith with be duking it out for starting the first baseman, but Alonso is the better of the two. He received some of the highest praise so far this spring, as Red Sox manager, Alex Cora, said that Alonso was the best hitter in Florida this Spring.

The Mets have a number of young studs that have been great so far this spring. They are most likely going to supporting a full lineup of players. They also have Tim Tebow, who is a born winner, and even if it’s a Spring Training game, he will never quit. For that reason, I’m going with the Mets.
