New York Mets: The Monday opener of the set, was an 11-inning battle which the Mets edged out Philly 7-6.On Tuesday, the Mets will be sending out Steven Matz for the start. In his 16.1 innings and 1-0 mark this year, Matz has a 1.65 ERA with 19 Ks and five walks. Robinson Cano finished the game on Monday, with a hit and two RBI. Wilson Ramos helped out the New York cause with two RBI and a run. But, pitching is still a struggle for the team. Noah Syndergaard, the former MLB All-Star struck out nine batters in five innings, while also allowing nine hits, five earned runs and walking three. Fortunately for the Mets, their bats came through, in the end, to propel the offense this time. Brandon Nimmo cracked a home run over the wall and turned a walk into a run, while Jeff McNeil finished with three hits in five at-bats in the 7-6 victory.
But this will not always be the case, like in the set against the Atlanta Braves, where after taking a commanding two-game lead in the series, the Mets suffered pitching meltdowns in back-to-back games. First, it was Jason Vargas and Corey Oswalt giving up a combined nine runs in a span of only 3.3 innings, and then it was pitching ace and two-time All-Star Jacob deGrom giving up four walks, five hits and three runs, including two homers. In fact, there were more questions than answers for the Mets after blowing it on the road and splitting the four-game series with the Braves.
Philadelphia Phillies: Philadelphia’s top hitter on Monday was Maikel Franco with a two-run homer in the fourth innings, while, JD Realmuto also registered a pair of RBI for the Phillies in that one. They are 3-7 in their last 10 Tuesday games and 0-4 in their last four in game two of a series. Philly is 3-9 in Pivetta’s last 12 starts and 2-7 in his last nine starts in game two of a series. Aaron Nola, the right-handed pitcher gave up seven hits, five runs and walked three in four innings. However, the Phillies were in the game all the way up until Hoskins failed to come up with a grounder at first base in the 11th inning, leading to a Mets victory.
The truth is that, much like before, they are continuing to get by in spite of their pitching. While the Phillies starting rotation is still far from being considered trustworthy, they have shown some signs of improvement in recent outings. In the previous series, righty Vince Velasquez held them to one run and two hits, while striking out four, in his six innings on the mound in Game 3. That standout performance followed Jake Arrieta’s gem in Game 1—eight strikeouts, while allowing only five hits and one run. While game 2 should be counted as one of those in spite of pitching performances. It remains to be seen if the Phillies can actually rely on their pitching finally getting to a point of consistency. That would be the next logical step in the team improving from a previous 80-82 record.

It’s been a really nice start for Matz, who has allowed just 12 hits over his three outings, and probably should have more than one quality start for his troubles. As for Pivetta, he was sketchy over his first two starts then just melted down versus the Nationals with seven earned in 3.2 innings. Thus, there is very little case of actually trusting him.
