Free MLB Pick: New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals

The red-hot New York Mets face off with the struggling Washington Nationals in a NL East showdown this week.

The New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball so far this season led by their strong pitching staff. That staff, anchored by Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom has a team ERA of 2.78. deGrom will get the start for the Mets in this game. In his last start against the Marlins, deGrom struggled in the fifth inning, giving up a four-run rally. However, his offense was able to bail him out and prevent him from taking his first loss. When he faced the Nationals on April 5, deGrom gave up just one earned run in 6.0 innings pitched.

On the other hand, the Washington Nationals have been on a slump all season. They finally stopped a three-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Rockies, but that is far from showing they are a real contender this year. Their pitching staff has also been great with their top-three starters having a combined 1.77 ERA. However, their offense has been stagnant outside of Bryce Harper. Harper is off to a hot start in 2018 with seven homers and 14 RBIs through the first 14 games. With the Nationals already being in fourth place in the NL East, they can’t afford to lose another series to the Mets if they want to keep within reaching distance of first place. Gio Gonzalez is slated as the probable pitcher for the Nationals and he is 10-1 in his 15 career starts at Citi Field with a 1.69 ERA.

Free MLB Pick: Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets

While the pitching matchup could be interesting in this one, the Mets are clearly the better team at this point in the season. With deGrom on the mound and a lineup able to produce runs, the Mets should be able to get to Gonzalez. On the other hand, unless someone other than Harper can produce for the Nationals, they are going to be in for a long game and long season.

Pick: Mets -171
