The New York Yankees are going to the playoffs this year as the #1 seed and AL East champions. The Tampa Bay Rays, with a potential AL Wild Card berth, still need to win out most of their games, and have a 65%, according to ESPN, of making it. Between these two teams, they’ve been fighting each other all season, a good fight too, but this becomes the closest to a preview for what the playoffs might have in store for us. Both teams have been chugging along toward the finish line, both going 6-4 in the last ten games. Giancarlo Stanton is back for the Yankees. The Rays have 5 more games left in the season, two against the MLB-leading Yanks and three against the AL-East 2nd to bottom Blue Jays.
Tonight, the Yankees will try a new pitching plan, yet to be disclosed to the public, perhaps similar to the Rays ‘opener’ scheme. The Rays will have an opener in LHP Brendan McKay (2-4, 5.40 ERA) while slotted to start is Yonny Chirinos (9-5, 3.67 ERA).
Last night, Luis Serevino made his 2019 debut, pitching a gem of a game going 5 IP without giving up a run with 9 strikeouts. The Yankees beat the Blue Jays, 8-3. Stanton went hitless but scored a run and batted in a player with a sac fly. Hot bat Brett Gardner hit another dinger, along with LeMahieu and Aaron Judge. Yankees bullpen did get beat up a bit.
Brett Gardner has been a defensive specialist for most of his career and only showing spurts of a batting ability along the way. (He’s a career .260/.343/.401). But recently he’s been contributing more than just on the field. In the last 15 games, he’s hit a slash line of .295/.348/.689 with 7 HR and 15 RBI and 11 runs. Hopefully, he can carry this into the postseason.
The Rays really need to win, and did just that winning a home series against the Red Sox. All the games were close, two as close as one score. But the Rays find a way and look like the favorite to make into the playoffs, they just need help from their stellar outfield to continue winning.
Alternating between 4 consistent players, one of which ending up on DH if not fielding. Those players include: LF/DH Tommy Pham (.274/.369/.448, 20 HR and 66 RBI) , CF Kevin Kiermaier (.227/.276/.392, 13 HR and 54 RBI) , RF/DH Avisail Garcia (.280/.331./457, 19 HR and 70 RBI), and RF Austin Meadows (.291/.363./561, 32 HR and 88 RBI). Meadows and Garcia have been hot in the last few series, while Pham on the colder end, but Kiermaier being stone cold, borderline liability how cold he’s been. But he’s a multiple Gold Glove winner and has tremendous defensive value.

The Rays need to win, but the Yankees batting lineup is just too smooth without a single crack. And they’re trying to mix it up, which can only be good for them as their bullpen has been solid this year.
