Happy Championship Monday! I know most of you will be fixated on the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship tonight, and I hope you win your bets on that, but don’t forget to put some action in on some baseball as well. We have a jam-packed day, but the game to highlight is the A’s versus Orioles. These are two teams looking to bounce back from weekend sweeps, and maybe, just maybe, Chris Davis will finally get a hit.
Oakland opened the season in rare fashion over in Japan as they took a pair of losses to the red-hot Seattle Mariners. To be honest, unless you’re an A’s or Mariners fan, I don’t even think anyone knew those games took place. However, Oakland brushed off those losses and took three out of four at home against the Mike Trout’s and Boston, before getting swept in the dust pan this weekend by the Astros. The Athletics have had no problem on offense so far this season as they’ve ranked top 10 in runs, hits, home runs and RBI’s. Their pitching as a team has been solid to start as well, ranking just outside the top 10 in ERA and opponent batting average. Khris Davis is well on his way to repeating as home run king, as he’s blasted a team-leading five homers and ten RBI’s.
The man to toe the rubber today for the A’s is Marco Estrada, who has allowed a total of six runs (five earned) in his first three starts. The veteran pumped in 5 1/3 innings against the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing just three runs on two hits and two walks. He has had some success against the Orioles in his long career, going 9-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 17 starts. This seasoned vet will be looking to get his first win of the season today.
The Orioles kicked off the season with road trips to New York and Toronto. They took two out of three on both trips before returning home to get clobbered by the Yankees, giving up a total of 29 runs, including 15 yesterday…yikes! That’s not even the worst news. The worst news is that first baseman Chris Davis is hitless so far this season…yes, I said hitless. To reiterate, he is 0-for-23 with 13 strikeouts this season and is hitless in 44 at-bats since last September. He is just two hitless at-bats away from the record of consecutive hitless at-bats by a position player. Keep in mind this is the same Chris Davis that hit 37 home runs just three seasons ago. After hitting 159 home runs in a four-year span, Baltimore gave him a seven-year, $161 million contract extension. I can promise you that Baltimore wishes that they could get a hold of that universal remote from the movie Click and rewind four years back to snag the pen out of the hand of Davis before he inked his signature on that contract. I truly hope Davis finds his stroke again, because he was a lot more fun to talk about when he was hitting long bombs and not whiffing at every pitch.
Andrew Cashner (1-1, 5.40) is set to start today for the Orioles. The Texan has struggled with his control this season as he enters today with more walks (7) than punch-outs (6). Cashner has not shown the A’s quality stuff as he is just 1-1 with a 6.84 ERA in five career starts against them. The bats for the Orioles will need to seriously help Cashner if he miraculously puts them in a position to win.

I know Davis has been nothing short of futile, but Jonathan Villar and Trey Mancini have been doing their best to keep the offense afloat. The speedster Villar has posted a .333 average with a pair of homers and Mancini is leading the team with four home runs and nine RBI’s. However, Villar and Mancini won’t be enough to keep them from drowning today. Oakland’s Kendrys Morales has Cashner’s number over his career (6-10, 3 HR, 6 RBI) and the A’s will look to get back on track today with a win.
