The Philadelphia Phillies will look to avoid getting swept by their NL East foe the Atlanta Braves. The Braves have brought out the offense in this four game series, as they have outscored the Phillies 19-11, so far in three games. Yesterday, the Phillies had to watch the Braves win the NL East division title. It was Atlanta’s first division title since 2013 and 13th NL East title in franchise history. The Braves will probably be resting most of their starters in the lineup for the next few days, as they celebrate this division title and get some rest before the postseason. Its a tough one to swallow for Philadelphia, considering they were in first for a few months of this season, but the Braves just stayed in the mix and took over in the second half. So now all the Phillies can hope for is a win to spoil Atlanta’s last home game of the regular season before the chomp shows up in October. Sundays starters are Aaron Nola (16-5, 2.44 ERA) vs Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 3.01 ERA)

Despite not winning the AL East this season, the Phillies should have a lot to smile about. The team lost 96 games last season and definitely surprised everyone with a dark horse season. Ever since the Phillies won the 2008 World Series, they have dropped in success every season. They lost the World Series, lost the pennant, lost in the division series, then third, fourth, and fifth in the AL East. Finally, the team then had three straight 90 plus loss seasons. We all thought a long rebuild was in order, but this team led the division for months. They had a 0.5 game lead on the Braves at the All-Star Break and just couldn’t keep up in the second half. The Phillies elimination number for the wild card is one and that will most likely end tomorrow as well. So, the best thing Philadelphia can do at this point is play with an honor and try to avoid a four game sweep. In yesterday’s game, the Braves had an early 4-0 lead and the Phillies fought back late, but fell short. The fighting Phil’s had two errors in the game and only four hits. The top of the lineup did most of the work and hopefully the middle of the lineup will pitch in as well. The team will be in good hands for the finale with Aaron Nola on the hill. Nola is in the running for Cy Young this season, but hasn’t pitched that well in the month of September. He hasn’t pitched deep into games and the long ball has paid a visit. Nola pitched at Atlanta to start the season and got a no decision.

The Braves are pumped to be back in October and probably feeling like those Atlanta teams from the 90’s to early 2000’s. The team has had four postseason appearances in the last 13 seasons and hasn’t been able to get past the division series. Hopefully this season, the Braves will make a deep playoff run, as the pennant is pretty much up for grabs this year. Atlanta has won four straight games and didn’t really half a tight division race in the second half, but you might as well start playing good ball right now because those wild card teams will be ready for any division winner. Anyway, the Braves have played well in this series with scoring early and also being able to comeback late. Those are the qualities a team needs to have as the postseason approaches. The ability to fight and have the mentality that you are never out of a game. Atlanta will look for the clean sweep of the Phillies and give their fans a fantastic last regular season home game. Anibal Sanchez will give the Braves a good chance for a sweep. Sanchez is coming off two straight quality starts, where he has given up one to two runs and piled up the strikeouts. Half of his 22 starts this season have been quality starts, but every now and then, he can get a wild hair up his nose.

So, the Phillies will probably play angry baseball since they watched the Braves still the division title from them this season. The Braves will probably be a little tired from celebrating their postseason birth and a lot of starters won’t play tomorrow. Even though the scoring has come in bunches in this series, this game will be low scoring and close. Both these pitchers have pitched well throughout the season for their teams and will do the same on Sunday. The Phillies will have the upper hand because they have their ace on the hill and don’t want to get swept. Phillies win 3-2 and will go against the spread.
