Aaron Nola has returned to Cy Young candidate form.
The LSU alum took to the mound yesterday in a 2-1 win for the Phillies, dealing a career-high 12 strikeouts and only allowing one run in what has continued to be the best month of his season thus far. Going into last night’s contest, Nola was allowing an ERA of 3.07 per contests in the month of May, and pushing his record to 4-0 on the year.
Bryce Harper backed up the right-hander with a first-inning, solo jack to center field and a double, providing an RBI and run that would be just enough offensively for the Phils. Shortstop Jean Segura would score the other run in the seventh inning.
Going into tonight’s contest, Jerad Eickhoff will step onto the mound for Philadelphia. While Eickhoff has posted a 2.65 ERA on the season, the Evansville, Ind. native allowed five earned runs in his last start, just five days ago against the Milwaukee Brewers. Eickhoff only made it through four innings in that contest.
Last night for the Rockies, offense did not come easily. Despite a total of nine hits and two walks, the runs didn’t come. There were also several occasions in which Nolan Arenado, Colorado’s talented third basement and best hitter (.312 batting average) took the plate with runners in scoring position and was unable to pull through.
Starting for Colorado this afternoon will be left-hander Kyle Freeland. Freeland is coming off a game against the Red Sox in which he allowed three earned runs and five hits, ultimately earning the win in a 5-4 decision. Moving into tonight, Freeland will look to continue to push down that 5.68 ERA, which currently sits at 7.41 in May based on his three starts and 17 innings pitched.

Looking to complete the sweep of the Rockies, Philadelphia will come out bats swinging. Having had the offense more-or-less stall as of late, scoring three or fewer runs in four of their last five, look for that to end tonight against a pitcher with an ERA over five. There is simply too much talent on this Phillies roster for that to continue. Sitting at fourth in the NL West and in the middle of a road trip, the Rockies will drop another one in Philadelphia this after noon. Philadelphia wins with the under.
