The Pirates continue to defy expectations, as their 201 runs scored rank third in the NL, and they’re on pace for around 200 home runs as a team, despite not having a central power hitter. Catcher Francisco Cervelli, the team’s offensive MVP at the quarter mark of the season, continues to surprise in his breakout season, sporting a .414 OBP (10th in the MLB). Former Rays outfielder Corey Dickerson is producing far more than he ever did in Tampa, as his batting average sits healthily above .300 and he’s potentially on his way to a 100+ RBI year. Center fielder Starling Marte is the third consistent Pirates starter whose average starts with a three; this year he’s showing his ability to be a five tool player, as he’s on track for 25 home runs, 119 runs and 40 stolen bases. However, the Pirates removed him from the lineup late Tuesday night. Third baseman Colin Moran has put together an impressive 2018 so far as well; for a player who entered the season with 37 career major league plate appearances, his .370 OBP is outstanding. Right fielder Gregory Polanco leads the team’s power surge, as his team-leading eight home runs put him on pace for 32. Jameson Taillon will make the start for the Bucs. Having yet to stay in the rotation for an entire season, Taillon’s 82.4 pitches per start are slightly unsettling.
There isn’t much in the MLB more unsettling than the first quarter of the season for the White Sox, though. After starting the season 9-20, they’ve had an abysmal last nine games, as their 1-8 record in that stretch puts them at 10-28, the worst mark in the majors. This isn’t to say the team hasn’t enjoyed solid numbers from several players so far, however. Jose Abreu is on track to hit at least 25 home runs for the fifth consecutive season. Young second baseman Yoan Moncada, one of the top prospects in the MLB a few years ago, is getting on base about 36 percent of the time, and the White Sox would surely like that number to be much closer to 40 percent. Designated hitter Matt Davidson continues to hit for power as well as just about anybody in baseball, considering he should top 35 or 40 homers this season barring injury. Chicago will put Hector Santiago on the mound; he has two starts and nine relief appearances so far, and the White Sox have lost in all 11 of those games.

The White Sox have the worst record in the MLB, and the Pirates are playing far better than anyone expected they would. The White Sox have lost eight of their last nine, and the Pirates have won six of their last seven. Santiago has been awful, and the White Sox have given him awful support. The game is at PNC Park.
