Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants

Pittsburgh Pirates (59-56) at San Francisco Giants (57-58)

MLB: Thursday August 9, 2018 at 10:15 PM ET (AT&T Park)

Line and Odds: Pittsburgh Pirates +124 / San Francisco Giants -134 OVER/UNDER 8

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants face off tonight in one of their most important four series games to determine who will be a National League playoff contender.

Headed to the mound tonight for the Pittsburgh Pirates is right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova. This past Sunday against the Cardinals, Nova over four innings gave up four runs on eight hits. He allowed three walks and only struck out three. Since July, he has seen his 2018 season take a downturn. In 31 innings over his last six starts, Nova has a 5.81 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and 17:10 K:BB.  His 2018 overall season stats though stand at a 4.49 ERA, 6-6 win/loss, 85 SO, and a 1.34 WHIP. Important batting leaders who will need to back him up if the team has any hopes of winning tonight’s game are Gregory Polanco, and Corey Dickerson. Polanco currently leads with 19 home runs and 64 runs batted in, while Dickerson leads with a .314 batting average.

The San Francisco Giants have a pep in their step headed into tonight’s game. After coming off of a two-game sweep against the Houston Astros, the Giants are looking to maintain a winning spirit and beat the Pirates. Scheduled in the roster to take the mound tonight to get the job done for the Giants is left-handed pitcher Andrew Suarez. Tonight, the lefty will be making his second career start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’ll bring to the game a 4.60 ERA, 4-7 win/loss, 92 SO, and a 1.32 WHIP. The batting leaders who will be backing him up tonight are Brandon Belt, Buster Posey, and Andrew McCutchen. Belt leads with 14 home runs, Posey leads with a batting average of .292, and McCutchen leads with 46 runs batted in.

Free MLB Prediction San Francisco Giants vs Pittsburgh Pirates

The last time Ivan Nova and Andrew Suarez were scheduled starters who both suffered losses was back in May during a three-game series against the Giants and Pirates. Suarez was bombed by the Pirates. They managed to get five runs and seven hits in four innings. It lead the team to winning 11-2. During Game 2, the Pirates were able to take the win 6-5, but the Giants came back in the series finale by flustering Nova. For tonight’s series opener, the predicted score sits at 4.4 for the Pirates and 4.7 for the Giants. The Moneyline Consensus is leaning 55% in the Pirates favor, while 45% is leaning in favor of the Giants. 70% of the Total Consensus is predicting the game to go over in favor of the San Francisco Giants winning. Despite what the Total Consensus might say, I predict the Pittsburgh Pirates will win tonight’s game.

Yikes. Six-hit shutout. Nothing going on offensively at all, top to bottom. Never mind the standings. This team just needs to get back to some semblance of productive ball. #DKPS #Pirates

Freese with the old Craig Wilson turn there. He had zero intention of NOT letting that ball hit him. Grizzled vet 'n at. #DKPS #Pirates

I’ve written about this. #sfgiants felt it was better to challenge him with older and more experienced than to let him dominate in a lower league. Felt it would help him in long run. #sfgiants

Just saw that Sergio Romo got his 100th save today, at Fenway. Still the gutsiest player I ever covered. #rays #sfgiants

Give me his defense in center and a .775 OPS and I’m happy. #sfgiants

In my scenario he moves to first and #sfgiants keep him. Sign a good vet C for a year or two. Posey can catch Bum and keep his hand in it. Hell of an emergency third catcher down the road. #sfgiants

Yes on Bart. Not sure Ramos would take that long. They challenged him all year at low-A. Struggled most of the year, but now raking. Maybe 2020. Too early to say. #sfgiants
