Two division rivals battle Wednesday in Los Angeles as the Angels look to clinch a series victory against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners have put together an impressive 2018 campaign despite a fair amount of adversity. The team has persevered and is looking to make its first trip to the playoffs since 2001 thanks to unbelievable success in 1-run games. While some analysts have chalked up that success to luck, some credit must be given to All-Star closer Edwin Diaz (78 SO in 47 innings, 0.81 WHIP), who has been phenomenal this season. Wednesday starter Marco Gonzales has already faced this Angels’ team 3 times in the last 9 weeks. He’s 1-0 in those outings with 4.24 ERA and is coming off of a 4-1 win against the Angels in his last start. However, Gonzales has not pitched well against the Angels historically, so he may need some help from the likes of Jean Segura (.330 BA) and All-Star sluggers Mitch Haniger (.271 BA, 17 HR) and Nelson Cruz (.267, 22 HR). Haniger, in particular, has owned Angels’ starter Jaime Barria, launching 2 bombs in 3 at-bats.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels continue to hover right around the outskirts of the playoff picture as we approach the All-Star break. With both the Mariners and A’s ahead of them in both the division and Wild Card standings, they will have plenty of opportunities to make up ground in the latter half of the season through division play. Wednesday starter Jaime Barria has been charged with the loss in his last 4 decisions but put together a decent outing his last time out against the Angels. He made need some help from an Angels’ offense that has found much success facing left-handed pitching this season. Mike Trout (.312/.455/.627) leads the way while Andrelton Simmons (.307 BA) is having a fantastic year at the dish. The problem with the Angels’ lineup is a lack of depth, as the bottom half doesn’t offer much. Simmons and Trout are a combined 11-22 off of Gonzales, but a lesser known Angel, Jefry Marte, may be the man to watch Wednesday as he has homered twice in 8 career at-bats off of Gonzales.

FREE MLB Prediction Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

The Angels are slight favorites in this game, but I believe that to be an error. With two quality arms on the bump, the advantage goes to the team with the superior bullpen and deeper lineup. I’ll take the Mariners and the OVER in this one, though I anticipate the game ending fairly near to the 8.5 total run projection.
