FREE MLB PICK: Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels

The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels won’t be making the playoffs this season. The Angels have known this for awhile since the American League has been stacked at the top with the Red Sox, Astros, Yankees, and Athletics having incredible records early, and beating up on the rest of the league. The Mariners knew October wasn’t around the corner for them when the Athletics caught them in the wild card race and just kept winning from there. Seattle saw its games back increase slowly and now their elimination number for not making the playoffs is eight. Both these teams have nothing to lose in this game and can just treat it like an early spring training game. The Mariners could stay alive a bit longer, but will be eliminated from postseason contention by this time next week. Friday’s starters are Roenis Elias (2-1, 3.50 ERA) vs Matt Shoemaker (2-0, 3.45 ERA)

The Seattle Mariners have 16 games left in the 2018 season and can still win 90 plus games as a consolation prize. Even if the Mariners won out for the season, 96 wins wouldn’t be enough to make the playoffs. The Oakland Athletics just need to win eight more games or if Seattle loses eight games, then Seattle is done. So, mathematically the chance is still there, but its not going to happen. The Mariners needed to get hot from mid-August on to catch Oakland and they could have helped themselves against the Athletics. Seattle only went 3-3 against Oakland in August and needed to win all six to really have a chance. Lately, the Mariners have lost two of three to the New York Yankees and were swept by the San Diego Padres in a two game series. The M’s had fun in last nights 8-2 win over the Angels in game one. Seattle had a 6-0 lead after four innings and had 12 hits. Most of the time when a team has a high scoring game, the next day the offense goes flat. So, hopefully the Mariners stay focused with the bats. Roenis Elias is a relief pitcher and he has been pretty solid overall. Elias has only had two starts this year and gave up two runs in the first outing, and five runs in the second outing. Expect this to be a bullpen game and just a test at starter again.

The Los Angeles Angels can still try to be an above .500 team this season. The Halos can pull this off with the way they have been playing lately. They swept the Chicago White Sox and took two out of three from the Texas Rangers. Even when a team is out of the playoff hunt in September, they can still pad some statistics, end the season on a high note with a winning streak, and test those farm guys. The Angels will be trying to do all three of these tasks and we know Mike Trout will continue his five tool player ways. In last nights loss, Trout and Justin Upton were the offense for Los Angeles, as they combined for four of the teams six hits. So, if the top of the lineup gets going tonight, then the middle of the order will be able to drive them in. The Angels will be ready for a fast start tonight on offense as they face a short term reliever in Elias. If that goes as planned for the Halos, then Matt Shoemaker will take care of the rest. In three starts this season, Shoemaker has gone almost 6 innings, giving up three runs in each game, and giving the team a chance to win. So, he has almost had a quality start in every outing and it will be his first start at home. With those competitive veins flowing, he will look to continue to deliver another good performance.

Cover the Spread 365

So, this game is still exciting because you have two pitchers that don’t have that many starts this season and might be trying to secure a spot in the rotation next season. This game will most likely be a middle of the line scoring game and both pitchers won’t go to deep in innings pitched. It will most likely be a close game and come down to which team gets that extra hit with runners in scoring position. If the Angels set the table late, then they will deliver. It’s a tryout game for next season, for some players, and they will look to deliver in some way as well. The Los Angeles Angels will win 5-3 and cover the spread.
