After a hot month of August, the St. Louis Cardinals look to continue their success coming closer and closer to October and the playoffs. Currently, they’re in line to win the NL Central and as of recently (7-3 in the last 10 games) the Cardinals look to clinch it very soon. The Cardinals beat the Pirates in an away series most recently and now continue their road trip to the mountains of Colorado to battle against the Rockies. Unlike the Cardinals, the Rockies have looked dismal in the last month, and actually got swept by the Cardinals a few series back. The Rockies are out of the playoff picture and now have engaged in tank mode. Perhaps they’ll show more fight in this series after a poor effort against the San Diego Padres. Tonight, the Cardinals will start RHP Michael Wacha (6-6, 4.98 ERA) on the mound against RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-6, 7.29 ERA).

SP Michael Wacha looks like the most underwhelming starter in the Cardinals starting lineup. But, to his defense he has missed some time. In the last 7 games (6 starts, 1 as opener) Wacha holds a 0-2 record, and a 4.06 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. Wacha once looked like a promising player– he showed flashes of his former self last season (8-2, 3.20 ERA). But to many injuries have detracted his career. Here’s to him getting back to his groove before October.

Chi Chi Gonzalez looks like the perfect example of just how bad the Rockies pitching has gotten. A minor league pitcher for most of his career, the Rockies called up Gonzalez to soak up some innings. It hasn’t gone either of their ways. Other than his poor season stats, he has struggled even more mightily the last 7 starts going 0-4 with a 8.36 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP. Yet Gonzalez showed promise his rookie year with the Texans. Hopefully he can reclaim this season and come back in a more certain spot next year for the Rockies.

Despite everything pointing toward the Cardinals, I see the Rockies coming up on top. For no specific reason other than good bats heating up against a lousy starter, and I just have a gut instinct.
