Game two of the four-game series between the Cardinals and Mets will be played tonight and this time without a chance of rain, meaning a FULL nine innings will be played between the two.
The St. Louis Cardinals come into tonight after making it one-half inning from potential extra innings against the Mets last night before play was suspended. Flaherty came out looking strong like the off and on pitcher he is going three up and three down effortlessly. Soon after Harrison Bader, playing in front of his friends and family for the first time smacked a double in the 3rd and proceeds to steal third shortly after. Carpenter goes on to bat in Bader on an infield single giving the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead. Flaherty continued to play well earning 4 strikeouts in the first three innings. Bader never failed to keep his loved ones smiling accumulating 2 more hits and an RBI before the night was over. Down two runs in the top of the ninth the Cardinals rallied with Wong batting in Ozuna and Bader tying the game batting in Wong before being thrown out at third in an attempted triple. Play was then suspended in the 9th and the Cardinals simply missed their chance to take the lead.
St. Louis has had a hard time this year finishing out half innings and allow a lot of damage with two outs. They sit 5 games back in the NL Central behind Miluawkee who sits in first and only a half game back from the second place Cubs. In their last 10, they’ve managed to win 5 which is expected being the .500 team they are. Despite the even record they’ve been a fairly streaky team and haven’t quite figured out how to be consistent.
The fairly inexperienced Daniel Poncedeleon will take the mound tonight for his second start all year. During that start, he pitched 5 innings allowing 2 hits and only 1 earned run. In his career, he has never pitched the Mets but all time has pitched 38 innings allowing 26 hits and 11 earned runs, making for a decent stat line.
The New York Mets come into today after last night obviously ending in the same fashion as the Cards. Degrom came out firing pitching 4 strikeouts before the end of the second inning and made way for Conforto to hit a two-run homer to take the lead in the third. Degrom continued to play well the entirety of the game allowing only 6 hits and 2 earned runs with 8 Ks before exiting in the 7th. From the third on it seemed the Mets had it won not allowing a run and scoring two more off RBIs from Smith and Rosario before allowing the Cardinals to tie it in the 9th.
The Mets sit 5.5 games back from the second place Phillies and 6 back from the leading Braves. They are another one of those .500 teams looking to hit their stride, play to their potential and make a playoff run. Like the Cardinals, they’ve won five of their last ten losing two of their last five series while splitting one of those with the Yankees due to a postponed game. This Mets team has struggled capitalizing with on men on base and have hit into countless double plays this year. One rare and very great feature to this team is their pitchers’ ability to hit the ball with over a .200 batting average and 4 home runs on the year.
Steven Matz will take the mound tonight facing a team he has struggled with immensely in the past. Against the Cardinals, he’s 0-3 with an 8.49 ERA and 16 hits over 11 innings pitched. In his last start, he pitched 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs compared to the three games prior allowing 22 hits and 8 earned runs over 18 innings. Not a solid year for Matz and based on numbers tonight could be rough as well.

Game two of this series should be no different from the first. Both of these teams have been struggling on the mound and tonight with an inexperienced pitcher on the mound for the Cards and for the Mets a guy who has never beaten them you can expect quite a few runs scored. It’s hard to tell who will come out on top so only time will tell but it SHOULD be a high scoring affair and betting the over wouldn’t be a bad idea.
